Meaning
Heaven is below and water above, which the Image reads as clouds rising to the sky: the rain is coming and is not here yet. The hexagram is about waiting, and about doing it well. Legge's Judgment promises good fortune "with firmness", and the Image gives one of the plainest instructions in the book: while he waits, the superior man eats and drinks, and is at ease. The line texts move the waiting closer and closer to danger, from the open country to the sand, the mud and finally into a pit.
Human Design puts the gate from 11°22′30″ to 17°00′ Sagittarius, in the Sacral centre, the motor the system ties to working and life-force energy. Its channel, which the school names Rhythm, runs to gate 15 in the G centre, the centre of identity and direction in the system's terms. The pair belongs to the Understanding circuit of the Collective group.
The engine's name is Fixed Rhythms, and the hexagram's image of meals taken while waiting suits it: waiting kept steady by habit. We read the gate, in our own words, as the ordinary patterns of a day, the hour things are done and the order they come in, as a way of holding still without being stopped. The Image's waiting is calm because it trusts the rain, not because it controls it.
On 13 of the 64 gates the engine's name differs from the title the Definitive Book gives, as the pyhd tables record it; this is one, where the book has Fixed Patterns. Opposite gate 5 on the wheel is gate 35, whose hexagram is advance, the sun rising over the earth: waiting faced by progress. A gate is a position in a chart, and the chart describes no events.

Gate 5 covers 5°37′30″ of the zodiac, from 11°22′30″ to 17°00′ Sagittarius, the 56th gate counting from gate 41. In 2026 the Sun passes through it from 3 December to 9 December, and within a day of those dates in other years. Each of its six lines covers 56′15″:
