Meaning
The hexagram has one broken line among five whole ones, and the tradition reads that single yin line as a small power that restrains a great one for a time. Wind blows over heaven; the clouds gather and do not yet rain. Legge's Judgment gives the picture: "dense clouds, but no rain coming from our borders in the west". The restraint is gentle and temporary, a matter of detail and patience rather than force, and the Image asks the superior man to refine the outward show of his virtue.
Human Design puts gate 9 from 5°45′ to 11°22′30″ Sagittarius, in the Sacral centre, one of the four motors, which the system ties to working and life-force energy. Its channel, which the school names Concentration, runs to gate 52 in the Root, the centre of pressure and drive in the system's terms; the pair is in the Understanding circuit of the Collective group.
The engine's name for the gate is Focus. Set beside its hexagram, we read it in our own words as the narrowing of effort: energy that could go anywhere held, lightly, on one task. The hexagram is careful about scale. What it restrains is great and what restrains it is small, so the hold cannot be forced and has to be kept up. At the channel's other end gate 52 carries the mountain hexagram, keeping still, and the two together can be read as attention that holds because it is also at rest.
The gate opposite, 16, carries the hexagram of readiness, thunder rising out of the earth. Restraint and enthusiasm face each other on the wheel. The wheel is Ra Uru Hu's arrangement and the contrast is ours to notice; the gate itself is a position in a chart, shared by everyone with a planet in it.
On the wheel
Gate 9 covers 5°37′30″ of the zodiac, from 5°45′ to 11°22′30″ Sagittarius, the 55th gate counting from gate 41. In 2026 the Sun passes through it from 28 November to 3 December, and within a day of those dates in other years. Each of its six lines covers 56′15″:
- Line 1: 5°45′ to 6°41′15″ Sagittarius

- Line 3: 7°37′30″ to 8°33′45″ Sagittarius

In a chart the gate is active when any of the 26 positions falls in it, and the channel Concentration is defined only when gate 52 is active too, by either set.
When the Personality Sun is in this gate, the school's table names the cross by the angle of the profile: the Right Angle Cross of Planning (9/16 | 40/37), the Juxtaposition Cross of Focus (9/16 | 64/63) or the Left Angle Cross of Identification (9/16 | 64/63). unverifiedWhat the record shows: The centre's name is a name. The schools' pairing of the centres with organs and glands, taken from the chakra books of the 1920s, has no physiological correspondence that anyone has shown, and we never read a gate or a centre as the body or its health.
