Meaning
Thunder over thunder: the trigram of arousal doubled. The hexagram is shock, and the tradition gives it one of its most memorable scenes. Legge's Judgment says that it gives "the intimation of ease and development", and then pictures the thunder that terrifies all within a hundred li while the one who keeps his composure does not let fall the ladle and the sacrificial spirits. Fear turns to laughter afterwards. The Image has the superior man, in fear and dread, set his life in order and examine himself.
Human Design places gate 51 from 15°07′30″ to 20°45′ Aries, in the Heart centre, one of the four motors, which the system ties to will. Its channel, which the school names Initiation, runs to gate 25 in the G centre; the pair is in the school's Individual group, in the circuit it calls Centering.
The engine names the gate Shock, which is also the hexagram's common English name; here it names the gate. We read it, in our own words, as the startle that rouses: what jolts a person awake, and the will to stand steady in it and then act first. The hexagram teaches composure, not fearlessness. Its steady person is frightened like everyone else and keeps hold of the ladle, and its lines move from the first fright to the laughter after it. Joined to gate 25, the innocence of acting without design, the gate can be read as courage that comes from being caught unawares and answering anyway.
Opposite gate 51 on the wheel is gate 57, the gentle penetrating wind: the sudden faces the gradual. The school names the Right Angle Cross of Penetration from 51 and 57 with 54 and 53.

Gate 51 covers 5°37′30″ of the zodiac, from 15°07′30″ to 20°45′ Aries, the 14th gate counting from gate 41. In 2026 the Sun passes through it from 4 April to 10 April, and within a day of those dates in other years. Each of its six lines covers 56′15″:

Gate 51's place on the zodiac, 15°07′30″ to 20°45′ Aries, is where the I Ching itself puts hexagram 51.
falseWhat the record shows: The wheel is Ra Uru Hu's arrangement: Shao Yong's 11th-century circle of the 64, rotated so that hexagram 41 starts at 2° Aquarius. No Chinese source ties a hexagram to degrees of the zodiac.

The Heart centre, where gate 51 sits, is an organ or gland, and the gate tells something about the body.
unverifiedWhat the record shows: The centre's name is a name. The schools' pairing of the centres with organs and glands, taken from the chakra books of the 1920s, has no physiological correspondence that anyone has shown, and we never read a gate or a centre as the body or its health.
