Human Design gate 20: The Now

Gate 20 is the place on Ra Uru Hu's wheel that carries hexagram 20, 觀 Guān: wind moving over the earth, looking out and being looked at. Human Design places it at the start of Gemini, in the Throat centre, and gives it three channels, to gates 10, 34 and 57.

Meaning

Two whole lines stand over four broken ones, something high that everything below can see. The character 觀 means to look and also to be looked at, as a tower overlooks a country and is seen from it. The Judgment is a moment from a rite: the worshipper "who has washed his hands, but not (yet) presented his offerings", in Legge's English, and stands there with a sincerity others respect. The lines are kinds of looking, from a child's glance to the gaze turned back on one's own conduct.

Human Design places gate 20 from 0°07′30″ to 5°45′ Gemini, in the Throat centre, which the system ties to expression and action. It is one of four gates with three channels: Awakening to gate 10 in the G centre, Charisma to gate 34 in the Sacral, and The Brainwave to gate 57 in the Spleen. All three are in the school's Individual group, two in the circuit it calls Integration and one in Knowing.

The engine names the gate The Now. With its hexagram, we read it in our own words as attention in the present: the pause before the offering, when everything is noticed and nothing has yet been done. The tower in the hexagram is also seen, so the gate can be read as presence, the way a person shows up in the moment for others to see. Its three channels give that presence three sources: identity in the G centre, working energy in the Sacral, and the instinct the system ties to the Spleen.

Opposite gate 20 on the wheel is gate 34, great power. In the I Ching the two hexagrams are inverses, each the other's lines flipped. The pair also forms a channel, Charisma, so this is one of the few places on the wheel where a gate's channel partner is the gate across from it.

Gate 20 covers 5°37′30″ of the zodiac, from 0°07′30″ to 5°45′ Gemini, the 22nd gate counting from gate 41. In 2026 the Sun passes through it from 21 May to 27 May, and within a day of those dates in other years. Each of its six lines covers 56′15″:

When the Personality Sun is in this gate, the school's table names the cross by the angle of the profile: the Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix (20/34 | 55/59), the Juxtaposition Cross of the Now (20/34 | 37/40) or the Left Angle Cross of Duality (20/34 | 37/40).
