Meaning
The earth above a lake: the bank overlooks the water, and the tradition reads the hexagram as approach, the higher drawing near to the lower to oversee and care for it. Two whole lines are rising from the bottom, and among the hexagrams of the Han calendars it marks a month of returning strength. Legge's Judgment promises great progress and success, with firm correctness, and then warns that the season will turn. The Image is generous: the superior man's instruction is inexhaustible and his care for the people without limit.
Human Design puts gate 19 from 7°37′30″ to 13°15′ Aquarius, second on the wheel after gate 41, in the Root centre, one of the four motors, which the system ties to pressure and drive. Its channel, which the school names Synthesis, runs to gate 49 in the Solar Plexus, the motor it ties to emotion; the pair is in the Ego circuit of the school's Tribal group.
The engine calls the gate Wanting. We read it, in our own words, as the pressure towards closeness: the wish to draw near and be drawn near to, to be among people who look after each other. The hexagram turns this into a duty of care rather than a craving. Approach in the I Ching is the stronger coming close to help, and its lines praise the advance of wisdom and of generosity. Joined to gate 49, the hexagram of changing the hide, the gate can be read as needs that, once met or refused, change the terms of a group.
Opposite gate 19 on the wheel is gate 33, the retreat: drawing near and withdrawing face each other across the circle. The two are also linked in the school's cross table, as the Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways.

Gate 19 covers 5°37′30″ of the zodiac, from 7°37′30″ to 13°15′ Aquarius, the 2nd gate counting from gate 41. In 2026 the Sun passes through it from 27 January to 2 February, and within a day of those dates in other years. Each of its six lines covers 56′15″:

In a chart the gate is active when any of the 26 positions falls in it, and the channel Synthesis is defined only when gate 49 is active too, by either set.
When the Personality Sun is in this gate, the school's table names the cross by the angle of the profile: the Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways (19/33 | 44/24), the Juxtaposition Cross of Need (19/33 | 1/2) or the Left Angle Cross of Refinement (19/33 | 1/2). falseWhat the record shows: The wheel is Ra Uru Hu's arrangement: Shao Yong's 11th-century circle of the 64, rotated so that hexagram 41 starts at 2° Aquarius. No Chinese source ties a hexagram to degrees of the zodiac.

The Root centre, where gate 19 sits, is an organ or gland, and the gate tells something about the body.
unverifiedWhat the record shows: The centre's name is a name. The schools' pairing of the centres with organs and glands, taken from the chakra books of the 1920s, has no physiological correspondence that anyone has shown, and we never read a gate or a centre as the body or its health.
