Meaning
Thunder moves above and the lake responds below. The hexagram is a younger sister given in marriage as a secondary wife, in the customs of ancient China, and the tradition reads it as a union entered from a lower position, where advancing on one's own account goes badly. Its Judgment is one of the bleakest in the book: "action will be evil, and in no wise advantageous", in Legge's English. The Image draws a wiser lesson: the superior man, looking to the far end of things, knows the trouble that can lie in a beginning.
Human Design places gate 54 from 15°07′30″ to 20°45′ Capricorn, in the Root centre, one of the four motors, which the system ties to pressure and drive. Its channel, which the school names Transformation, runs to gate 32 in the Spleen; the pair is in the Ego circuit of the school's Tribal group.
The engine names the gate Ambition; the Definitive Book, as the pyhd tables record it, titles it Drive, one of the eight places where the two sets differ in substance. We read the gate, in our own words, as the drive to rise from where one begins. The hexagram's caution is about how: advancing by one's own pushing fails, and what succeeds is patience and loyalty, as the fifth line's princess goes to her marriage in sleeves plainer than her attendant's. Joined to gate 32, duration, the gate can be read as ambition that needs something lasting to hold to.
Opposite gate 54 on the wheel is gate 53, gradual progress, also its pair in the book's order. The school names the Right Angle Cross of Penetration from 54 and 53 with 57 and 51.

Gate 54 covers 5°37′30″ of the zodiac, from 15°07′30″ to 20°45′ Capricorn, the 62nd gate counting from gate 41. In 2026 the Sun passes through it from 5 January to 11 January, and within a day of those dates in other years. Each of its six lines covers 56′15″:

falseWhat the record shows: The wheel is Ra Uru Hu's arrangement: Shao Yong's 11th-century circle of the 64, rotated so that hexagram 41 starts at 2° Aquarius. No Chinese source ties a hexagram to degrees of the zodiac.
