Human Design gate 34: Power

Gate 34 is the place on Ra Uru Hu's wheel that carries hexagram 34, 大壯 Dà Zhuàng, great power: thunder above heaven, four whole lines driving upward. Human Design places it in early Sagittarius, in the Sacral centre, and gives it three channels, to gates 10, 20 and 57.

Meaning

Four whole lines push up from the bottom under two broken ones, and thunder sounds above heaven: strength at its full. The tradition does not admire strength for its own sake. Legge's Judgment says only that "it will be advantageous to be firm and correct", and the Image has the superior man take no step that is not in keeping with propriety. The line texts are about a ram that butts a hedge and gets its horns caught: power used without judgment ends in being stuck.

Human Design places gate 34 from 0°07′30″ to 5°45′ Sagittarius, in the Sacral centre, the motor the system ties to working and life-force energy. It is one of four gates with three channels: Exploration to gate 10 in the G centre, Charisma to gate 20 in the Throat, and the channel the school names Power, after the gate itself, to gate 57 in the Spleen. All three are in its Individual group.

The engine names the gate Power, a plain translation of the hexagram's own sense; on this page it names the gate. We read it, in our own words, as raw capacity, energy available for many purposes, and the hexagram's demand that it be guided. Through its three channels it can be read as strength put behind a way of acting (gate 10), behind the moment (gate 20), or behind an instinct (gate 57). The ram's tangled horns are the tradition's warning that the strength is not itself the direction.

Opposite gate 34 on the wheel is gate 20, looking out; the two also form the channel Charisma, and their hexagrams are each other's lines flipped. The school names a cross, the Sleeping Phoenix, from 34 and 20 with 59 and 55.

Gate 34 covers 5°37′30″ of the zodiac, from 0°07′30″ to 5°45′ Sagittarius, the 54th gate counting from gate 41. In 2026 the Sun passes through it from 22 November to 28 November, and within a day of those dates in other years. Each of its six lines covers 56′15″:

When the Personality Sun is in this gate, the school's table names the cross by the angle of the profile: the Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix (34/20 | 59/55), the Juxtaposition Cross of Power (34/20 | 40/37) or the Left Angle Cross of Duality (34/20 | 40/37). What the record shows: The wheel is Ra Uru Hu's arrangement: Shao Yong's 11th-century circle of the 64, rotated so that hexagram 41 starts at 2° Aquarius. No Chinese source ties a hexagram to degrees of the zodiac.
