Meaning
需 means to wait, and also to need, as one needs food. Heaven's strength sits below the water of the clouds, ready to move but held back by danger ahead. The Judgment promises success to those who wait with sincerity and says it will then be good to cross the great river; the line texts walk the waiting person closer and closer to the water, from the open meadow to the sand and then into the mud. Our gloss is waiting, provisioning. The text and Legge's English are on the hexagram 5 page.
Key 5 pairs with key 6, its figure turned over: the received order sets waiting next to quarrel.
The three bands
The Shadow band, Miring, is the third line, 需于泥, 致寇至: waiting in the mud, which draws robbers on. It is the haste that steps forward before the ground is firm and so creates the trouble it feared. The Gift band, Conviviality, is the Image, 君子以飲食宴樂: clouds rise to the sky, and the noble person eats, drinks and is at ease. Waiting, in this reading, is a time for good company and keeping strong. The Siddhi band, Hospitality, is the top line, 有不速之客三人來, 敬之: three guests arrive uninvited; receive them with respect, and in the end there is good fortune.
The bands move from forcing the moment, to enjoying the time before it, to welcoming whatever the moment brings.
In a profile
Key 5 belongs to no particular row. It stands in a profile wherever one of the thirteen bodies stood between 11°22′30″ Sagittarius and 17°00′ Sagittarius at birth or at the design moment, and so it can fill any of the thirteen rows or the three further tags.
The Sun passes through it each year from about 4 to 8 December. People born then have key 5 as their Life's Work and its opposite, key 35, as their Evolution, the Earth's place. For people born about three months later, from about 28 February to 5 March, it is the Radiance, where the Sun stood at the design moment.
Each of its six lines is 56′15″ wide. A position from 11°22′30″ Sagittarius is in line 1, read by our theme Foundation; one from 16°03′45″ Sagittarius is in line 6, Overview. Every key's lines take the same six themes of ours, and the line of a fast body like the Moon depends on the birth time to the hour.

How the schools read it
- The Zhouyi, after Legge (1882)
- With sincerity there will be brilliant success; firmness brings good fortune, and it will be advantageous to cross the great stream. The text in full is on the hexagram 5 page.
- Human Design (Ra Uru Hu, 1987 onward)
- Gate 5, in the Sacral centre. The parent system gives the gate its own name and reading, which are Jovian Archive's and which we do not give here.
- Richard Rudd, The Gene Keys (2009)
- Key 5, read at three bands he calls the Shadow, the Gift and the Siddhi, each with a word of his own, under a chapter title of his own; we reproduce neither. He names key 35 its programming partner.
- EsoTerrier
- Waiting that is not idle: it eats, rests and keeps good company until the time is right, steps into the mud when it moves too soon, and at its peak welcomes what arrives unasked.
Claims about it
-
Key 5 is a code held in the genes, and contemplating it changes how they are expressed.
unverifiedWhat the record shows: The central metaphor of Rudd's system, given by its author, not a finding. The profile is the positions of thirteen bodies at two moments, read on a 64-part wheel; no gene, codon or measurement of the body enters it.
-
Key 5 belongs to the Ring of Light, a chemical family in the body tied to threonine.
unverifiedWhat the record shows: Rudd's grouping. His ring sizes follow the real number of codons per amino acid in the genetic code, but which hexagram goes with which codon is his own choice, and nothing in genetics links a hexagram to an amino acid.
-
The place of key 5 on the zodiac, 11°22′30″ Sagittarius to 17°00′ Sagittarius, is an old I Ching teaching.
falseWhat the record shows: The wheel is Ra Uru Hu's, fixed between 1987 and 1989 by turning Shao Yong's 11th-century circle of the hexagrams so that hexagram 41 begins at 2° Aquarius. No Chinese source we know ties the hexagrams to degrees of the zodiac.
