Gene Keys profile, key 16: 豫 Yù

Key 16 is 豫 Yù, thunder rising out of the earth, the hexagram of readiness and of delight. The ancient kings, says the Image, made music from it; our three words for its bands come from the line that trumpets its pleasure, the line as firm as a rock, and that music.

Meaning

豫 means both to be ready, prepared in advance, and to be glad. Thunder, movement, rises out of the earth, devotion: energy that comes up from below and finds the ground willing. The single strong line, the fourth, is the one the others move with. The Judgment says it is good to set up helpers and to set the hosts in motion. Our gloss is readiness, delight. The Image makes thunder into music: the ancient kings composed music to honour virtue and offered it to the highest and to their ancestors. Key 16 pairs with key 15, its figure turned over; its opposite on the wheel is key 9.

The three bands

The Shadow band, Boasting, is the first line, 鳴豫凶: delight that announces itself, crying out its pleasure, and turns out badly. The Gift band, Promptness, is the second line, 介于石, 不終日: firm as a rock, it does not wait for the day to end. It sees the first sign and moves in good time. The Siddhi band, Song, is the Image, 先王以作樂崇德: the former kings made music and honoured virtue, delight turned into something shared that lifts others with it.

The bands move from pleasure shown off, to readiness that acts on a sign, to joy that becomes common.

Key 16 belongs to no particular row. It stands in a profile wherever one of the thirteen bodies stood between 5°45′ Gemini and 11°22′30″ Gemini at birth or at the design moment, and so it can fill any of the thirteen rows or the three further tags.

The Sun passes through it each year from about 27 May to 1 June. People born then have key 16 as their Life's Work and its opposite, key 9, as their Evolution, the Earth's place.
