How it works
A Gene Keys profile is not a new calculation. It is the Human Design chart read in a different order and in a different language. Rudd's system names the positions, groups them and describes each hexagram at three bands; the astronomy underneath is the parent system's, and the school's own table of which body feeds which row matches ours row for row.
Two moments. The chart takes thirteen bodies twice: the Sun, the Earth (the point opposite the Sun), the north and south lunar nodes, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Once at birth, and once at the design moment, the instant when the Sun stood exactly 88 degrees of longitude behind its birth position. That is about three months earlier, between roughly 87 and 92 days depending on the season, because the Sun moves faster in the northern winter. The school's pages say "88 days", but the official generator, like every engine we checked, computes the degrees.
The wheel. Each of the 26 positions is read on Human Design's wheel, which lays the 64 hexagrams round the tropical zodiac at 5.625 degrees each, starting with hexagram 41 at 2° Aquarius; each hexagram is divided into six lines of 0.9375 degrees. A position is written key.line, so 60.4 is key 60, line 4. The wheel is Ra Uru Hu's, fixed between 1987 and 1989 by turning Shao Yong's 11th-century circle of the hexagrams, not a teaching of the I Ching itself.
The thirteen rows. Eleven of the positions become the rows of the profile, in this reading order. The names are the system's own short labels; the line beside each is ours.
| Row | Body and moment | Our line |
|---|---|---|
| Life's Work | Sun at birth | the work you are here to do, in the open |
| Evolution | Earth at birth | what keeps testing you, and grows you |
| Radiance | Sun at the design moment | what keeps your spirit bright |
| Purpose | Earth at the design moment | the quiet reason underneath it all |
| Attraction | Moon at the design moment | who you draw in, and why |
| IQ | Venus at birth | how your mind argues and defends itself |
| EQ | Mars at birth | how you feel when someone comes close |
| SQ | Venus at the design moment | the rhythm you grew up inside |
| Core | Mars at the design moment | the deepest theme, and the calling, in one hexagram |
| Vocation | Mars at the design moment | the calling (the same hexagram as the Core) |
| Culture | Jupiter at the design moment | the company and places you thrive in |
| Brand | Sun at birth | how you are seen (the same hexagram as Life's Work) |
| Pearl | Jupiter at birth | what comes back to you |
Brand always repeats Life's Work and Vocation always repeats the Core, since each pair reads the same body; we mark them as twins. IQ, EQ and SQ are labels older than the system: Goleman's emotional intelligence (1995) and Zohar's spiritual intelligence (1997). The school's table also names three more positions outside the rows, which we show as tags: Creativity (Uranus at the design moment), Relating (Mercury at birth) and Stability (Saturn at the design moment).
Three groups and twelve pathways. The rows are read in three runs, which we call Core four (the four Sun and Earth rows), Close bonds (Attraction to Core) and Work and reward (Vocation to Pearl). Rudd calls them the Activation, Venus and Pearl Sequences, and the three together the Golden Path. Twelve pathways join each row to the next, and the last returns from the Pearl to Life's Work. Our names say which two rows each joins: Work to test, Test to spirit, Spirit to reason; Reason to bonds, Bonds to mind, Mind to heart, Heart to rhythm, Rhythm to core; Calling to company, Company to standing, Standing to return, Return to work. Rudd's names for them are shown beside ours in the chart, as his.
Each key. A key is named by its hexagram's number, character and pinyin, our one-line gloss, and our three words for the bands, each with a short line: for key 1, 乾 Qián, strength that never rests, the words are Overreach, Tirelessness and Effortlessness. Our definitions of the bands are these: the Shadow band is where the quality contracts, into fear, defence and reflex; the Gift band is the same quality in daily use, what a person does well when at ease; the Siddhi band is its peak, with nothing left to defend. Every key also has an opposite, the key 180 degrees round the wheel, whose six lines are the reverse of its own; Rudd calls it the programming partner.
Lines. The line of each row is read by one of six themes of our own, the same for every key and row: Foundation, Natural ease, Trial, Network, Projection and Overview. The school changes its line keynotes by row and sequence; we do not use them.
Repeats and the birth time. One hexagram spans more than five degrees, so the same key often falls in several rows; the chart says where it repeats. The design Moon (Attraction) moves about half a degree an hour, and in our tests an hour's error in the birth time changed that row in 14 of 15 cases where any row changed, so the chart flags it as sensitive to the time. The school's own advice for an unknown time is to try several and compare.
The sample. For the person in Figure 1, born on 19 January 1989 at 19:17 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the birth falls at 00:17 UTC on 20 January and the design moment at 03:03:21 UTC on 25 October 1988, 86.9 days earlier. Life's Work is 60.4, 節 Jié, measure, the joint in the bamboo, and Brand repeats it; Evolution is 56.4, its opposite; Radiance is 50.6 and Purpose 3.6. Key 3 returns in Attraction and EQ, both 3.5, and the Core and Vocation are 25.2, 无妄 Wú Wàng.
Checked. On 944 generated births, from 1880 to 2050 in 35 time zones and including 320 births one minute either side of a boundary, our engine equals an independent implementation on every birth and design instant and on all 24,466 positions; three open-source engines and three online calculators agree within their stated precision. This is agreement about a convention.
Origins and history
The hexagrams are about 2,800 years old; the wheel is from the late 1980s; the profile and its three bands are Rudd's, from 2002 on.
| When | Who | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Late 9th century BCE | Zhou diviners | The 64 hexagram texts of the Zhouyi compiled, in the order (King Wen's) that every later system numbers by. |
| 1011 to 1077 | Shao Yong | Arranges the 64 hexagrams in a circle; the Human Design wheel is that circle, turned. |
| 1954 to 1968 | Gamow; Nirenberg and Matthaei; Khorana; Holley | The genetic code proposed as triplets (1954), the first codon read (1961), the code completed: 64 codons for 20 amino acids and three stops; a Nobel Prize in 1968. |
| 1973 | Martin Schönberger | Verborgener Schlüssel zum Leben (Munich; English 1979): the first book to map the 64 codons onto the 64 hexagrams, the idea Rudd's genetic language descends from. |
| January 1987 to 1992 | Alan Robert Krakower (Ra Uru Hu) | Says Human Design came to him in an experience on Ibiza; the wheel fixed 1987 to 1989; The Human Design System published in 1992. |
| 1991 | Johnson F. Yan | DNA and the I Ching: a second codon mapping, different from Schönberger's. |
| Late 1990s to early 2000s | Richard Rudd | Studies and teaches Human Design with Ra Uru Hu, brings it to Britain and runs a school there, and writes two of its handbooks. |
| 2002 | Richard Rudd | Begins to write the Gene Keys, which he describes as both written and received. |
| 2009 | Richard Rudd, Gene Keys Publishing | The Gene Keys: Unlocking the Higher Purpose Hidden in Your DNA, 64 chapters, self-published; the catalogue record of the edition prints 2011. |
| 2011 | Ra Uru Hu | Dies on Ibiza; Jovian Archive continues Human Design. |
| By 2012 | Gene Keys | Profiles from the official generator show eleven rows and twelve pathways; a licensee in Vienna issues reports with pathway names of its own. |
| 1 May 2013 | Watkins, London | The trade edition, The Gene Keys: Embracing Your Higher Purpose. |
| 2016 | Rudd with Werner and Laura Pitzal | A webinar presents Human Design and the Gene Keys as complementary but different in essence. |
| 2017 and 2018 | Gene Keys Publishing | GENE KEYS first registered as a UK word mark (2017); printed guides to the three sequences (2017 and 2018). |
| 2023 to 2025 | Gene Keys Publishing Ltd | GENE KEYS registered in the UK in five classes, in the EU and in the US, with a logo; DREAM ARC and STAR PEARL registered too. |
| January 2025 | Gene Keys | Star Pearl, a paid course on three further rows (Creativity, Relating, Stability). |
| 13 April 2026 | Wikipedia editors | The English Wikipedia article on the Gene Keys deleted for want of reliable sources independent of the author. |
| October 2026 | EsoTerrier | The profile rebuilt on the published structure with our own words (9 October); the engine checked on 944 births (12 October); all 192 band words rewritten from the hexagram texts (14 October). |
Rudd tells his own story of where the system came from; it is in Stories and lore below. What the record shows is the order of the pieces: the hexagrams first, the codon comparisons from 1973, the wheel from 1987, and Rudd's profile and bands from the 2000s, built on the Human Design chart.
The 64 keys
Each key has its own page: the hexagram it is read from, our gloss and our three words with the passages of the Chinese text they come from, its opposite, its place on the wheel and when the Sun passes through it, and the claims made about it. Rudd's words and chapter titles are not on them.

Variants and what we leave out
What other tools and the school itself offer, and why we do or do not.
- Rudd's words, titles and texts. The published system names each key with a chapter title and three words of Rudd's; we ship none of them. Our three words per key were first written in October 2026 and, when a check found most were close synonyms of his, written again on 14 October from each hexagram's own Judgment, Image and line texts: none is equal to any of his 192, and none shares a stem with his three for the same key.
- The school's product names. What the school calls the Hologenetic Profile and the Golden Path, and its Activation, Venus and Pearl Sequences, appear here only as its names, beside ours.
- Line keynotes by row. The school changes each line's keynote with the row and sequence, and the sets for the second and third groups are sold. We give six themes of our own instead and never reproduce the school's.
- The six wounds. Rudd attaches a wound to each of the six lines; the official page and practitioner pages differ on the sixth. We note that the set exists and do not use it.
- Star Pearl. The three further positions are computed and shown as tags; the course's 15 pathways are not public, and STAR PEARL is a registered mark.
- Codon rings. Rudd groups the keys into 21 rings named after amino acids. Each key page names its ring only as his grouping; the chart does not show rings.
- Dream Arc and the paired readings for couples. Paid courses that use no calculation we could verify; not offered.
- Licensees' names. A Vienna licensee prints pathway names of its own; we record them so that nobody takes them for the official ones.
- The mean node. One calculator uses the mean lunar node; we default to the true node, as the others do, and offer the mean. No row reads a node, so the profile is the same either way.
- "88 days". We compute 88 degrees, and say so on the chart.
- Daylight saving. For a clock time that a change of clocks skipped, some calculators take the later offset, we take the earlier; a time that occurred twice is read as its first occurrence everywhere. The school's help pages put differences between calculators down to the ephemeris and the birth city; in our tests they came from the birth time, these clock changes and the node.
- Sidereal. Some users ask for it; the school's position is tropical only, and so is ours.
- Human Design's own layer. Type, authority, centres and channels belong to the parent system; our profile names its type, authority and profile in one cross-reference line and leaves the rest to that chart.
- The drawing. The tools we surveyed draw the school's own geometry in its colours, which shrinks to unreadable labels on a phone. We draw three panels read from top to bottom, with the pathway names on the connectors.
- Our I Ching chart. Our I Ching page casts a birth hexagram by a different, Ming-period method on the lunar date. The two "birth hexagrams" are different things, and each chart names its method.
Myths and disputed claims
What is said about the system, who says it, and what the record shows. The label is ours.
-
The 64 keys are hidden in the DNA, and contemplating a key changes how that gene is expressed.
unverifiedWho says it: Richard Rudd (the first edition's subtitle and his glossary); the school's pages; our own old page.
What the record shows: The system's central metaphor, given by its author. The profile is the positions of thirteen bodies at two moments read on a 64-part wheel; no gene, codon or measurement of the body enters it.
-
The 64 hexagrams correspond to the 64 codons of the genetic code, one for one.
unverifiedWho says it: Schönberger (1973), Yan (1991), Castro-Chavez (2012), Jovian Archive, Rudd.
What the record shows: Both sets number 64 because both are built from a small alphabet in fixed groups: two kinds of line in six places, four bases in three. The published mappings disagree with each other, and the code was worked out by biochemistry alone.
-
Each key belongs to a codon ring, a chemical family in the body tied to one amino acid.
unverifiedWho says it: Richard Rudd.
What the record shows: The ring sizes follow the real number of codons per amino acid, but which hexagram carries which codon is Rudd's choice. Nothing in genetics links a hexagram to an amino acid.
-
A person's "frequency" governs how their genes are expressed, and contemplation switches off patterns inherited from past hardship.
unverifiedWho says it: Richard Rudd's teaching; our old page.
What the record shows: The study of gene expression is a real science, but no study links contemplating a hexagram to it, and "frequency" here is not a measured quantity. The school's teaching, labelled.
-
The design positions are taken 88 days before birth.
falseWho says it: genekeys.com and many practitioner pages.
What the record shows: They are taken when the Sun stood 88 degrees of longitude behind its birth position, between about 87 and 92 days earlier; the official generator and every engine compute the degrees.
-
The profile is calculated from your exact birth coordinates.
falseWho says it: Our own old page.
What the record shows: Only the date, the clock time and the time zone enter; latitude and longitude play no part, since the profile has no houses or angles.
-
The Radiance row governs physical health, and the Pearl guarantees prosperity.
unverifiedWho says it: The school's how-to-read page in softer words; the old page writer's file.
What the record shows: No evidence behind either. We describe Radiance as the design Sun and the Pearl as what comes back to a person, as themes.
-
The Pearl row is about money.
unverifiedWho says it: Users of the school's forum; the third sequence's subtitle.
What the record shows: The school's own page says the Pearl is about what is essential, not necessarily finance, and nothing connects a Jupiter position to income.
-
The second group of rows maps three seven-year cycles of childhood, and the Core row shows a wound fixed at conception.
unverifiedWho says it: Richard Rudd, "Hologenesis and the Sacred Wound".
What the record shows: A teaching story told as cosmology. Conception cannot be timed from a birth chart, and the seven-year renewal of the body's cells is a popular myth.
-
The placing of the hexagrams round the zodiac, with hexagram 41 at 2° Aquarius, is an old I Ching teaching.
falseWho says it: Pages that call it "the I Ching wheel", our own old page among them.
What the record shows: It is Ra Uru Hu's, fixed between 1987 and 1989 by turning Shao Yong's 11th-century circle of the hexagrams. No Chinese source ties hexagrams to zodiac degrees.
-
The hexagrams are the oldest binary code, and Leibniz took binary arithmetic from them.
falseWho says it: The old page writer's file; many popular pages.
What the record shows: Leibniz had binary arithmetic by 1679 and saw Shao Yong's arrangement in 1703; the Zhouyi's own order is not binary.
-
The I Ching goes back over three millennia.
disputedWho says it: Many popular pages; the school's glossary gives a later date.
What the record shows: The core text of the Zhouyi is from the late 9th century BCE, about 2,800 years ago; its commentaries are centuries later.
-
"Siddhi" means "divine gift".
falseWho says it: The old page writer's file.
What the record shows: Sanskrit siddhi means accomplishment or attainment.
-
Profiles differ between calculators because only the official profiler uses an accurate ephemeris, so other software should not be used.
disputedWho says it: genekeys.com's help pages.
What the record shows: Every modern ephemeris gives the same key and line except within arcseconds of a boundary. The real differences are the birth time, the reading of a clock time skipped or repeated by daylight saving, and the node model.
-
Human Design is deterministic and masculine; the Gene Keys are fluid and feminine.
unverifiedWho says it: Practitioner blogs; our own old page.
What the record shows: A marketing contrast. Both read the same 26 positions on the same wheel; we say what each does with them.
-
Ra Uru Hu gave Rudd the UK rights to Human Design for nothing, and the Gene Keys appeared only after Ra's death in 2011.
unverifiedWho says it: Anonymous forum posts.
What the record shows: Hearsay, and the dates contradict it: Rudd dates the writing from 2002 and the book from 2009, two years before Ra Uru Hu died.
-
Ra Uru Hu disapproved of the Gene Keys.
unverifiedWho says it: Human Design community posts.
What the record shows: No statement by him about the Gene Keys was found. Rudd credits Human Design and names its founder.
-
The system, or its profile programme, was launched in 2013.
unverifiedWho says it: A mirror of the deleted Wikipedia article.
What the record shows: 2013 is the Watkins edition's year. Profiles from the official generator, dated 2012, already show eleven rows and twelve pathways.
-
The book is a number one bestseller.
unverifiedWho says it: Podcast and event introductions.
What the record shows: No list or sales figure was found; we do not describe sales.
-
Our old table: a title and Rudd's three words for every key.
falseWho says it: Our own engine before 9 October 2026.
What the record shows: Several titles contradicted published ones and three keys had wrong words. All were dropped; the 192 words were written anew from the hexagram texts on 14 October 2026, none equal to any of Rudd's.
-
No part of the system may be used commercially, and nobody should use another calculator.
disputedWho says it: Gene Keys Publishing Ltd's terms and help pages.
What the record shows: A method is not protected by copyright or trade mark. The names GENE KEYS, DREAM ARC and STAR PEARL are registered marks and are used here only to name the system; Rudd's words and titles are not reproduced.
Stories and lore
These are told as their tellers tell them.
The light. Rudd tells that at 29 he woke into what he describes as another world, a field of light that seemed to hold intelligence and memory and no fear; that for three days and nights, without sleep or food, he filled notebooks with diagrams while travelling across England; and that it took about seven years to absorb. He says it was not a download of content but the seed of what became the Gene Keys. The school dates the writing from 2002 and the book from 2009.
The teacher and the student. Rudd was an early student of Ra Uru Hu, brought Human Design to Britain, ran a school and wrote two of its handbooks before that work, as he puts it, changed over time into the Gene Keys; his site credits the parent system and names its founder. What he set aside, he says, was Human Design's type, strategy and authority, which he found too narrow, for a language of three frequencies. Some in the Human Design community tell it as a betrayal; nothing of that is documented.
The sacred wound. Rudd's cosmology for the second group of rows: the universe begins in stillness, breaks open, and life ever after tries to heal that first split; in each person, he teaches, the wound is gathered at conception and met in the Core.
The great change. Rudd's glossary speaks of a Great Change from 1987 to 2027, which restates Human Design's own prophecy of a change in humanity in 2027; a 2024 interview with him is titled The Soft Journey to the Future Human. A belief of the school.
The wine merchant's son. Event biographies describe Rudd as a family director of Berry Bros. & Rudd, the London wine merchant founded in 1698; his own site does not mention it.
The Voice on Ibiza. The parent story: in January 1987 the Canadian-born Alan Robert Krakower, an advertising man and publisher, said a voice dictated the Human Design system to him over eight days on Ibiza. He took the name Ra Uru Hu and published the system in 1992.
Evidence and criticism
What is established is the calculation. A profile is a fixed function of the birth instant and the time zone, and our engine computes it as the official generator and every independent engine do. That is agreement about a convention.
What is not. No controlled study of the Gene Keys exists. The only article in a journal is a 2022 proposal, in a university counselling department's own review, to combine the system with Bowen family therapy for clients who already hold such a worldview. Wikipedia editors found no sign it had been peer reviewed, and in April 2026 deleted the article on the Gene Keys because no reliable source independent of the author could be found; a copy survives on a mirror site, with a birth date and a launch year for which we found no source.
The genetics. The genetic code was worked out between 1961 and 1966 by biochemistry: 64 triplets of four bases, coding 20 amino acids and three stop signals. The comparisons with the hexagrams began with Schönberger in 1973 and were redone differently by Yan in 1991 and others since; they share only the number 64, there is no agreed mapping, and scholars of the I Ching treat them as modern readings laid over the book. Rudd's codon rings follow the real counts of codons per amino acid and otherwise assign hexagrams to amino acids by his own choice. The genetic language is his metaphor, and nothing in genetics or medicine supports it.
The parent system. Wikipedia classes Human Design as pseudoscience. A court in Florence held in 2020 that no copyright subsists in the system as such, which is what lets independent calculators, ours included, compute it.
Critics and users. A 2023 essay warns against tying oneself to a birth chart and treats the profile as a raft to leave behind once crossed. New users on the system's forum ask what the words mean, which row to begin with and why another site gives different keys. The school itself reminds its readers that the map is not the territory, and to hold the profile lightly.
Within the two communities. Some Human Design followers call the Gene Keys a simplification or a betrayal, some Gene Keys readers call Human Design cold; both agree that the keys are the same 64 gates on the same wheel.
Names and rights. Rudd's books and pages are in copyright, and GENE KEYS is a registered trade mark of Gene Keys Publishing Ltd; a method is not protected by either. So we give the system's structure as facts with their sources, use the name only to say whose system this is, and write every word of the keys ourselves.
Terms
- Key
- In Rudd's system, one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching read at three bands. We name each by its number, character, pinyin and our gloss, as in "12 否 Pǐ, blockage, heaven and earth apart", never by the system's own label for it.
- Hexagram, gate and key
- The same number in three systems: hexagram N of the I Ching, gate N of Human Design, key N here.
- Key and line
- A position written key.line: 60.4 is key 60, line 4. Each key spans 5.625° of the zodiac on the wheel and each line 0.9375°.
- The three bands
- Rudd's three levels of each key, which he calls the Shadow, the Gift and the Siddhi. Our definitions: the Shadow is the band where the quality contracts (fear, defence, the reflex); the Gift the band in daily use; the Siddhi the peak of the same quality, with nothing left to defend. The word shadow was Jung's (1912) before it was Rudd's, and Rudd's own name for the three-band table is the title of Ken Wilber's first book (1977); we say the three bands.
- Siddhi
- Sanskrit for accomplishment or attainment; in yoga texts the powers said to come with practice.
- Rows (spheres)
- The thirteen places of a profile, from Life's Work to Pearl, each fed by one body at birth or at the design moment. The names are the system's short labels; the one-line role of each is ours.
- Birth and design
- The two moments a profile is read from: the birth, and the design moment, when the Sun stood 88 degrees of longitude behind its birth position, about three months earlier. Human Design calls them Personality and Design.
- Groups
- Our names for the three runs of rows: Core four, Close bonds, and Work and reward. Rudd calls them the Activation, Venus and Pearl Sequences, together the Golden Path.
- Pathways
- The twelve links between consecutive rows, the last returning from the Pearl to Life's Work. Our names say which two rows each joins (Work to test, Test to spirit, and so on).
- Twins
- Two rows that always share a key because they read the same body: Brand repeats Life's Work and Vocation repeats the Core.
- Opposite key
- The key 180° round the wheel, whose six lines are the reverse of this one's. Rudd calls it the programming partner.
- Line theme
- Our six themes for the lines, the same for every key and row: Foundation, Natural ease, Trial, Network, Projection, Overview. The school's own line keynotes change by row and are not used.
- Codon ring
- Rudd's grouping of the keys into 21 families named after amino acids. His scheme; named on our pages only as his.
- The wheel
- Human Design's placing of the 64 hexagrams round the tropical zodiac, fixed by Ra Uru Hu between 1987 and 1989, with hexagram 41 beginning at 2° Aquarius. Not a Chinese teaching.
