Key 46 is 升 Shēng, wood beneath the earth, the hexagram of ascent: a tree pushing up through the ground, slowly, a little each day. Our three words for its bands come from the top line's climbing in the dark, the Image's piling up of small things, and the fifth line's steps.

Meaning

升 means to rise, to go up, as a measure of grain is lifted or a tree grows. Wood, the gentle and penetrating trigram, is under the earth and grows up through it, not by force but by persistence. The three bands

The Shadow band, Heedlessness, is the top line, 冥升: rising in the dark, climbing without seeing where it leads. The Gift band, Cultivation, is the Image, 君子以順德, 積小以高大: wood grows in the earth, and the noble person, following virtue, piles up small things until they are high and great. The Siddhi band, Loftiness, is the fifth line, 升階: rising by the steps, a height reached so evenly that each stair feels like level ground.

So the bands run from blind climbing to patient growth to an ascent that no longer feels like effort. They describe a quality, not anyone's future.
