Key 42 is 益 Yì, thunder below wind, the hexagram of increase: the upper gives to the lower, and both grow. Our three words for its bands come from the top line, where no one adds and someone strikes, the Image's moving towards the good, and the fifth line's kind heart that needs no asking.

Meaning

益 means to increase, to add, to benefit. The figure is key 12 with its fourth line moved to the bottom: something taken from above and given below, so the lower is enriched and the whole grows. Thunder and wind, the eldest son and the eldest daughter, each strengthen the other. We read increase as growth of any kind that comes from giving. Key 42 pairs with key 41, the same figure turned over; its opposite on the wheel is key 32.

The three bands

The Shadow band, Self-seeking, is the top line, 莫益之, 或擊之, 立心勿恆: no one adds to him, someone may strike him, his heart is not steady. It is taking more and giving nothing back. The Gift band, Improvement, is the Image, 君子以見善則遷, 有過則改: the noble person, seeing good, moves towards it, and having faults, corrects them. The Siddhi band, Kindness, is the fifth line, 有孚惠心, 勿問元吉: with a sincere and kind heart, there is no need to ask; supreme good fortune.

The three bands describe growth by taking, by mending and by giving.

Key 42 belongs to no particular row. It stands in a profile wherever one of the thirteen bodies stood between 20°45′ Aries and 26°22′30″ Aries at birth or at the design moment, and so it can fill any of the thirteen rows or the three further tags.

The Sun passes through it each year from about 11 to 16 April. People born then have key 42 as their Life's Work and its opposite, key 32, as their Evolution, the Earth's place.
