Key 25, 无妄 Wú Wàng: spring thunder under the open sky

Meaning

无妄 means "without the false", without pretence, recklessness or design. Thunder, movement, rolls beneath heaven, so that every movement follows heaven's own course rather than a private plan. The statement of the hexagram promises great success with firmness, and warns that whoever is not correct meets misfortune and gains nothing by moving. Our gloss is without pretence, unscheming. The three bands

The Shadow band, Scheming, is the second line, 不耕穫: reaping without having ploughed, which the commentaries read as acting for the result rather than the work. It is counting the harvest before the field is turned. The Gift band, Guilelessness, is the name itself, 无妄: acting from what is right, without calculation or pretence. The Siddhi band, Spontaneity, is the Image, 先王以茂對時育萬物: the ancient kings, in rich accord with the seasons, nourished all things. It is acting in time with what is happening, with no scheme behind it.

The three bands are one quality, sincerity of action, seen as its opposite, its practice and its ease.

Key 25 belongs to no particular row. It stands in a profile wherever one of the thirteen bodies stood between 28°15′ Pisces and 3°52′30″ Aries at birth or at the design moment, and so it can fill any of the thirteen rows or the three further tags.

  What the record shows: Rudd's grouping. His ring sizes follow the real number of codons per amino acid in the genetic code, but which hexagram goes with which codon is his own choice, and nothing in genetics links a hexagram to an amino acid.

  What the record shows: The wheel is Ra Uru Hu's, fixed between 1987 and 1989 by turning Shao Yong's 11th-century circle of the hexagrams so that hexagram 41 begins at 2° Aquarius. No Chinese source we know ties the hexagrams to degrees of the zodiac.
