A sculptor bringing a shape out of stone

The image

Chisel, mallet, dust and a block of stone half worked: the sculptor stands close to it, cutting away a little at a time. Part of a figure has already appeared, and the rest is still rough. The picture is of the work in progress, the long middle of making something, when the shape in the mind and the shape in the stone are slowly drawing together.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the sculptor is imagination made solid by effort. The vision comes first, but it becomes real only through countless small decisions about what to remove. Our keyword is "Form from vision", and our keynote says patient labour frees the shape that was imagined. A placement here can be read as a creative, determined temperament, a respect for material and craft, and the patience to work toward a result that takes a long time to appear. The image is about subtraction too: much of making is knowing what to take away.

Across the wheel is Gemini 27, a Romani woman stepping out from the trees, our "Out of the wild". As a reading aid, the two pictures share an emergence: a person coming into the open from a hidden place, and a figure coming into view from inside the stone.

Lynda Hill treats the degree just before Sagittarius 27 as its Karmic Condition and the degree just after as its Quest Degree: here Sagittarius 26, the bearer of the colours, and Sagittarius 28, where a pretty stream runs under a bridge built long ago. Read in order, a cause is held up for all to see, a vision is cut into lasting stone, and an old structure goes on joining two banks.

A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 26°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 27°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 26°50′ reads Sagittarius 27, and so does one at Sagittarius 26°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 28 after Sagittarius 26°59′, or back into Sagittarius 26 before Sagittarius 26°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
