The image
Grey beards, faded uniforms, medals pinned on for the occasion: the men round the fire served together decades ago, and they have come back together to remember. In 1925 the last veterans of the Civil War were old men, and reunions like this were still held. The picture is of the campfire and the company, the stories retold and the names of those not present.
Elsie Wheeler described the image to Marc Edmund Jones in San Diego; our old line followed Rudhyar's 1973 wording closely and was replaced by our own on 2026-10-10.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the veterans' fire is loyalty that has outlasted its occasion. The war is long over, but what it made between these men has not ended, and they keep it alive by meeting. Our keyword is "Old comrades", and our keynote says men who served side by side keep faith with one another round the fire. A placement here can be read as a deep sense of fellowship and of shared history, a respect for what was endured together, and a wish to honour it. The image can also be read as memory's way of turning hardship into a bond.
The opposite degree is Gemini 1, a boat with a glass floor on calm water, our "Seeing beneath the surface". As a reading aid, the pair joins two ways of looking into depths: watching the sea's floor through glass in safety, and looking back together over a shared past that was anything but safe.
Lynda Hill would place a Karmic Condition just behind Sagittarius 1 and a Quest Degree just ahead of it. Before Sagittarius 1 is Scorpio 30, a Halloween clown in motley; after it is Sagittarius 2, a sea flecked everywhere with foam. From a night of licensed folly, the pictures turn to old soldiers by their fire, and then to open water whipped into white.

A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 0°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 1°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 0°48′ reads Sagittarius 1, and so does one at Sagittarius 0°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 2 after Sagittarius 0°59′, or back into Scorpio 30 before Sagittarius 0°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Sagittarius 1 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Scorpio 30, Sagittarius 2 and Gemini 1 beside it.

- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
