The image
On the plateau at Giza the great stone Sphinx, with a lion's body and a human head, lies in front of the Pyramids. Sand has buried it and been cleared away more than once, and it is still there, gazing east. The picture needs nothing added: two of the most famous monuments of the human world, side by side under a desert sky.

Meaning
Read as a symbol, the Sphinx and the Pyramids are what lasts. Rulers, languages and whole ways of life have come and gone around them, and they remain, half explained. Our keyword is "Monumental endurance", and our keynote says human construction and riddle outlast every generation. A placement here can be read as a feeling for permanence and for long time, a patience that thinks in centuries, and an attraction to questions that are not easily answered. The Sphinx adds the riddle: endurance here is not only strength but mystery, something that keeps its meaning to itself.
The degree opposite is Gemini 14, thoughts passed between minds with no words spoken, our "Direct communion". As a reading aid, the two pictures turn on understanding without speech: one mind reaching another directly, and a stone face that has said nothing for thousands of years and still draws people to wonder what it means.
For Lynda Hill, the degree before Sagittarius 14 is its Karmic Condition and the one after it is its Quest Degree. Sagittarius 13, a widow's history coming out, lies before; Sagittarius 15, a groundhog looking for its shadow, lies after. The run moves from a private past exposed, to a great past that keeps its own counsel in stone, to a small animal consulted about the season to come.

A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 13°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 14°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 13°49′ reads Sagittarius 14, and so does one at Sagittarius 13°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 15 after Sagittarius 13°59′, or back into Sagittarius 13 before Sagittarius 13°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Sagittarius 14 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Sagittarius 13, Sagittarius 15 and Gemini 14 beside it.

- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
