The image
A colony of pelicans is on the move. Heavy-bodied, wide-winged, they lift from the water in a line and fly low along the coast to settle somewhere else: another lagoon, another island, another stretch of shallows. The picture is of the shift itself, the whole flock relocating together. It does not say why they left.
Before 2026-10-10 our table gave this degree a different image. The 1925 card wording for it has not been seen by our research; our own line was checked against Jones's 1953 text and Rudhyar's 1973 lines.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the pelicans' move is adaptation. Birds go where the fish are, and when a place changes they change places. Our keyword is "Changing ground", and our keynote says birds leave one place for another to live in. A placement here can be read as a readiness to move when circumstances shift, a practical, unsentimental sense of where one can thrive, and the courage of the group that relocates together. It can also be read as a question about home: whether it is a place, or the company one travels with.
Opposite this degree is Gemini 19, a huge book from long ago, our "Preserved knowledge", still speaking to whoever opens it. As a reading aid, the pair sets what stays put and keeps its meaning across centuries beside what moves on when conditions call for it.
Lynda Hill sets Sagittarius 19 between its Karmic Condition, one degree back, and its Quest Degree, one degree on. Sagittarius 18, the little children in sunbonnets, comes before; Sagittarius 20, workers sawing through ice, comes after. The pictures can be followed from the smallest ones prepared for the sun, to a colony moving to new waters, to hard cold work that opens a way through what has frozen.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 18°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 19°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 18°54′ reads Sagittarius 19, and so does one at Sagittarius 18°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 20 after Sagittarius 18°59′, or back into Sagittarius 18 before Sagittarius 18°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Sagittarius 19 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Sagittarius 18, Sagittarius 20 and Gemini 19 beside it.

- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
