A toddler's first unsteady steps

The image

The child lets go of the chair, sways, and steps forward, once, twice, arms out for balance. Somewhere close by an adult is crouched with arms open, ready to catch. The picture is a moment every family remembers: the first time a child moves across a room on its own feet. It is tentative, comic and enormous all at once.

Elsie Wheeler described the image to Marc Edmund Jones in 1925. Until 2026-10-10 our table printed a line very close to Rudhyar's 1973 version; the present line is our own.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the first steps are independence at its beginning. The child does not yet walk well, and may fall many times, but has discovered that standing alone is possible. Our keyword is "First independence", and our keynote says new ability is risked one unsteady step at a time. A placement here can be read as courage in trying things for the first time, a tolerance for wobbling and falling, and the delight of doing something unaided. The open arms nearby are part of the image: early independence is easier with someone ready to catch.

In Lynda Hill's practice Sagittarius 4 is read between two neighbours, the Karmic Condition behind it and the Quest Degree ahead. Before Sagittarius 4 sits Sagittarius 3, a chess game between two players; after it, Sagittarius 5, where an owl, old and still, perches high in a tree. The three pictures can be followed from the strategic mind, to the first steps of the body, to a wisdom that watches quietly from above.

The degree opposite, Gemini 4, is mistletoe hung beside holly, our "Seasonal memory", where simple objects bring a whole heritage of feeling back into the present. As a reading aid, the pair contrasts beginnings and remembrance: a child taking the first steps of a new life, and the old customs of a season that adults keep for the sake of the children they once were.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 3°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 4°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 3°39′ reads Sagittarius 4, and so does one at Sagittarius 3°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 5 after Sagittarius 3°59′, or back into Sagittarius 3 before Sagittarius 3°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
