A widow's history told at last

The image

The picture is less a single moment than a story being told. A woman whose husband has gone has a past, and now it is coming out: through gossip, letters, a chance remark, or her own telling. We are not told whether the history is scandalous or simply unknown. The image catches the moment of disclosure and the attention it draws.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the widow's history is about privacy and its end. A life that was lived away from view is now open to others, and once it is known it is also judged. Our keyword is "Hidden history revealed", and our keynote says what was lived privately is made known and judged. A placement here can be read as a concern with personal histories, with honesty and disclosure, and with how stories change when they become public. It can also be read from the side of the listeners: the image asks what we do with what we learn about others.

Lynda Hill would read Sagittarius 13 with its Karmic Condition, the degree before, and its Quest Degree, the degree after. Before Sagittarius 13 is Sagittarius 12, a flag turning into a crowing eagle; after it is Sagittarius 14, the Sphinx beside the Pyramids. The three images can be read as an emblem finding its voice, a private past finding an audience, and a great monument whose riddle has kept its silence for thousands of years.

A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 12°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 13°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 12°12′ reads Sagittarius 13, and so does one at Sagittarius 12°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 14 after Sagittarius 12°59′, or back into Sagittarius 12 before Sagittarius 12°00′. Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
