The image
Steam, irons, baskets of shirts and sheets, parcels wrapped and labelled for collection: the laundry is a family business, and everyone in it has a task. The work is hot, repetitive and skilled, and its results leave the shop in other people's hands. We describe the family with respect and read the image as a picture of work and service.
The 1925 card wording for this degree is outside what our research has seen. Our earlier line followed Rudhyar's 1973 rewording and was replaced on 2026-10-10 with our own, compared with his and Jones's 1953 lines.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the family laundry is service that is needed by everyone and noticed by few. Clean clothes look effortless; the effort is all in the back room. Our keyword is "Humble service", and our keynote says cleanliness is restored by patient, undervalued work. A placement here can be read as diligence and reliability, a pride in work done well whether or not anyone sees it, and the strength of a household that works together. The image also asks the onlooker a quiet question about which kinds of work are honoured and which are taken for granted.
Lynda Hill would read Sagittarius 22 against Sagittarius 21, its Karmic Condition, where a dog and a child try on borrowed spectacles, and against Sagittarius 23, its Quest Degree, people arriving from abroad to make a new home. From play with another's way of seeing, the pictures go to a family's daily labour, and then to newcomers crossing into a place where they mean to stay.
The degree opposite is Gemini 22, a dance held in a barn, our "Communal joy", where a community celebrates its work with unpolished festivity. Beside it as a reading aid, the laundry shows the work itself, steady and indoors, that such celebrations come after.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 21°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 22°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 21°45′ reads Sagittarius 22, and so does one at Sagittarius 21°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 23 after Sagittarius 21°59′, or back into Sagittarius 21 before Sagittarius 21°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Sagittarius 22 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Sagittarius 21, Sagittarius 23 and Gemini 22 beside it.

- Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.
- Dane Rudhyar (1973)
- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
