Running water under a crossing of long ago

The image

A clear stream runs between grassy banks, and over it arches a bridge of old stone or weathered timber, its parapet softened by moss. People have crossed here for generations. The picture is peaceful, the sort of view painted on country calendars, with water forever moving beneath a crossing that does not move at all.

Our earlier line followed Rudhyar's 1973 rewording closely; on 2026-10-10 our own line, compared with his and Jones's, replaced it.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the old bridge is continuity across change. The stream is never the same water twice; the bridge is the same bridge, and it has made the crossing easy for everyone who came after its builders. Our keyword is "An old crossing", and our keynote says an old structure joins two banks over running water. A placement here can be read as a feeling for tradition and the long work of those who came before, a gift for connecting people or places, and an appreciation of beauty that has grown with age. The image is calm; it trusts the stones.

Sagittarius 28 sits, in Lynda Hill's terms, between a Karmic Condition, Sagittarius 27 and its sculptor at work on a block of stone, and a Quest Degree, Sagittarius 29, a heavy-set boy pushing a lawnmower. The pictures move from stone being shaped, to stone that has stood for generations, to the small, everyday labour of keeping a garden in order.

The opposite degree is Gemini 28, a failure made public and the matter closed, our "Public failure". As a reading aid, the pair contrasts a structure that has held for generations with an undertaking that did not hold and is openly admitted: two ways a thing's long story can be told.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 27°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 28°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 27°27′ reads Sagittarius 28, and so does one at Sagittarius 27°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 29 after Sagittarius 27°59′, or back into Sagittarius 27 before Sagittarius 27°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
