The image
This is one of the most mysterious lines of the set. There is a lamp, and its light is bodily: it shines from, or into, the body itself, at a precise point beside the left temple. The picture does not explain how. It may suggest the lamp a miner wears at his brow, or the halo of a saint, or simply an inner brightness that has found a place to shine out. We read it as a symbol only.
Our old table gave this degree nearly as the 1925 card has it until 2026-10-10; the line on this page is our own, after the image Elsie Wheeler described.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the lamp at the temple is illumination that belongs to the person. It is not a light one goes to, like a lighthouse, but a light one carries and sees by. Our keyword is "Light in the body", and our keynote says clarity is lit within the body itself. A placement here can be read as a kind of embodied understanding, knowing that is felt as much as thought, and as a steady inner clarity that lights the way a step at a time. The left side, which the image names, is left for the reader to interpret. The tradition offers no settled meaning for it, and neither do we.
The opposite degree, Gemini 11, is a fresh way of meeting life as it really is, our "Realism". As a reading aid, the pair sets plain seeing of the world as it is beside a light kindled inside the one who sees: two sources of clarity facing each other across the wheel.
Sagittarius 11 sits, in Lynda Hill's terms, between a Karmic Condition and a Quest Degree. Before Sagittarius 11 is Sagittarius 10, Opportunity as a golden-haired goddess; after it is Sagittarius 12, a flag that becomes an eagle and crows. The run goes from a bright figure passing by, to a light settled within, to a symbol that comes alive and finds its voice.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 10°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 11°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 10°58′ reads Sagittarius 11, and so does one at Sagittarius 10°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 12 after Sagittarius 10°59′, or back into Sagittarius 10 before Sagittarius 10°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Sagittarius 11 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Sagittarius 10, Sagittarius 12 and Gemini 11 beside it.

- Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.
- Dane Rudhyar (1973)
- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
