A heavy-set boy behind the lawnmower

The image

A summer afternoon, a lawn that needs cutting, and a stout boy leaning into the handle of an old push mower as the blades whirr. He might rather be indoors or in the shade, but the grass has to be done before someone comes to look. The picture is gently comic and entirely ordinary, a chore of suburban life. We describe the boy kindly and read him as a symbol only.

Our table carried a different image here before 2026-10-10. The 1925 card for this degree lies outside what our research has seen, so Jones's 1953 text and Rudhyar's wording were the comparison.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the boy and his mower are about the effort that keeps up appearances. The lawn does not need to be cut for its own sake; it is cut because a tidy front is part of belonging to a street. Our keyword is "Effort for appearance", and our keynote says comfort is roused to keep things in order. A placement here can be read as a sense of duty toward home and neighbours, a readiness to do the dull work that keeps things presentable, or, read the other way, a reluctance that has to be overcome each time. The image is good-humoured about both.

Lynda Hill's names for the two neighbours of Sagittarius 29 are the Karmic Condition, before it, and the Quest Degree, after it: Sagittarius 28, a stream with its bridge of long ago, and Sagittarius 30, the head of the Catholic Church. The run passes from an old crossing, to a boy tidying a lawn, to one figure at the head of a whole religious body.

Opposite is Gemini 29, a mockingbird singing as spring begins, our "Herald of renewal". As a reading aid, the pair sets one voice announcing that the season has turned beside one boy dealing with what that season makes grow.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Sagittarius 28°00′ up to, but not including, Sagittarius 29°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Sagittarius 28°04′ reads Sagittarius 29, and so does one at Sagittarius 28°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 30 after Sagittarius 28°59′, or back into Sagittarius 28 before Sagittarius 28°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Sagittarius 29 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Sagittarius 28, Sagittarius 30 and Gemini 29 beside it.

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
