The image
It is the last night of October. Lanterns glow, masks and costumes are everywhere, and among them a clown in patchwork motley capers and teases. The picture has the double mood of Halloween itself: the dark, the spooks and the skeletons, and the laughter that answers them. The clown belongs to both, frightening and funny at once.
Elsie Wheeler gave Jones this picture in 1925. Our table's earlier line leaned heavily on Rudhyar's 1973 rewording and was dropped on 2026-10-10.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the Halloween clown is folly given permission. On this one night the usual order is suspended, and the fool can mock what is feared, including the skeleton's own costume. Our keyword is "Licensed folly", and our keynote says a night of disguise turns fear into laughter. A placement here can be read as a gift for humour in dark places, a liking for masks and play, and an understanding that laughter can be a way of facing what frightens us. The image also holds a reminder that the licence lasts one night: the costumes come off in the morning.
Opposite this degree is Taurus 30, a peacock displaying on a lawn of great age, our "Display on old ground". As a reading aid, the pair joins two kinds of costume: the bird's own splendour against the dignity of what has lasted, and a clown's patchwork against the darkness of the season.
Scorpio 30 sits, in Lynda Hill's terms, between a Karmic Condition and a Quest Degree. Scorpio 29, the mother pleading with the chief, comes before; Sagittarius 1, veterans of the Union army gathered round a campfire, comes after. The run moves from a plea in the face of power, to laughter in the face of fear, to old comrades keeping faith with one another round a fire.

A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 29°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 30°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 29°11′ reads Scorpio 30, and so does one at Scorpio 29°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Sagittarius 1 after Scorpio 29°59′, or back into Scorpio 29 before Scorpio 29°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree.
