The image
Five piles of sand, perhaps left on a building site or a beach, and children busy among them: digging, heaping, patting walls into place, knocking them down again. The number is precise and the play is not. The picture has the energy of an afternoon outdoors and the untidiness of real children, with nothing planned and nothing permanent.
The image belongs to the 360 that Elsie Wheeler described to Marc Edmund Jones in 1925. Our earlier line followed Rudhyar's 1973 rewording closely; our own replaced it on 2026-10-10.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the sand heaps are structure in its raw state. Sand takes any shape and keeps none for long, which makes it the ideal material for learning. Our keyword is "Playing with form", and our keynote says the young experiment with the raw stuff of structure. A placement here can be read as a playful, exploratory approach to making things, a readiness to try out shapes without committing to them, and a sense that skill grows from many small experiments. The five heaps can be read as five possibilities, or five senses, or simply as more material than one child could use alone.
By Lynda Hill's rule the five heaps of Scorpio 15 have a Karmic Condition behind them and a Quest Degree ahead. Before Scorpio 15 come the linemen of Scorpio 14, up the telephone poles; after it comes Scorpio 16, a smile spreading across a girl's face. The run passes from adult work that joins people, to children's work that joins grains of sand, to a feeling that shows itself without effort.
The degree opposite is Taurus 15, a man bundled up against the cold in a jaunty silk hat, our "Style in adversity". As a reading aid, the pair puts the free play of children with formless sand beside a grown man's care to keep his form and his flair in hard weather.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 14°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 15°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 14°56′ reads Scorpio 15, and so does one at Scorpio 14°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 16 after Scorpio 14°59′, or back into Scorpio 14 before Scorpio 14°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Scorpio 15 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Scorpio 14, Scorpio 16 and Taurus 15 beside it.

- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
