The image
A wood or an avenue in autumn, each tree at its brightest: red, copper, gold and the last of the green. The picture is at the height of the season, before the wind strips the branches. It has no figures in it and needs none; the colour is the event. Anyone who has walked under such trees knows how briefly it lasts.

Meaning
Read as a symbol, the autumn trees show that ripeness has its own splendour. The colour comes because the year is ending, not in spite of it. Our keyword is "Ripened splendour", and our keynote says maturity shows in a brilliance that precedes letting go. A placement here can be read as a feeling for the beauty of experience, an ease with the later seasons of anything, a project, a friendship, a life, and a readiness to release what has finished. The image is not mournful. It treats the letting go as part of the display.
Lynda Hill treats the degree just before Scorpio 18 as its Karmic Condition and the degree just after as its Quest Degree. Scorpio 17, the mother who is also her child's father, lies before; Scorpio 19, a parrot repeating what it has heard, lies after. One way to read the three: a person carrying a double load, the full colour of maturity, and then a bird that copies words without making them its own.
Opposite this degree is Taurus 18, a woman leaning from a window to hold out a bag, our "Holding out". As a reading aid, the two pictures both show something offered to view: what was kept close, held out where others can see it, and the trees giving up their colour for anyone who passes.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 17°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 18°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 17°47′ reads Scorpio 18, and so does one at Scorpio 17°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 19 after Scorpio 17°59′, or back into Scorpio 17 before Scorpio 17°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Scorpio 18 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Scorpio 17, Scorpio 19 and Taurus 18 beside it.

- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
