Scent pouring from a broken bottle

The image

Glass is scattered where a scent bottle has shattered, and the scent is spreading. The picture holds two things at once: the loss of something carefully made and kept, and the sudden fullness of its fragrance in the air, stronger now than it ever was in the bottle. The line says nothing about how the bottle broke. It shows only the spill and the scent rising from it.

Until 2026-10-10 our table took this degree almost straight from the 1925 card; it now has a line of our own.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the spilled perfume is about release. What was precious because it was sealed up becomes, once the seal is broken, something everyone in the room can share. Our keyword is "Spilled fragrance", and our keynote says something fine and treasured runs out of a broken vessel. A placement here can be read in two ways that belong together: as the sorrow of a loss that cannot be undone, and as the generosity of what escapes when containment fails. Feelings held back for a long time can behave like this, and so can talents that only reach others once the container cracks.

Opposite this degree is Taurus 2, a storm full of lightning, our "Charged release". As a reading aid, the two images are both about pent-up things let go: tension in the air discharged in sudden light, and fragrance freed from glass.

Lynda Hill calls the degree that precedes Scorpio 2 its Karmic Condition and the one that follows its Quest Degree. Scorpio 1, the sightseeing bus, comes before; Scorpio 3, neighbours working together to raise a house, comes after. From seeing the world from the outside, the pictures move to something released into the open, and then to people joining their work to build.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 1°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 2°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 1°55′ reads Scorpio 2, and so does one at Scorpio 1°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 3 after Scorpio 1°59′, or back into Scorpio 1 before Scorpio 1°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
