The image
A tour bus moves through a city or along a coast, stopping at the famous views. Its passengers look out of the windows, perhaps step down for a photograph, then climb back on for the next stop. The picture is cheerful and ordinary: a guide's voice, a planned route, a crowd of strangers sharing a day. Nobody on the bus lives in the places it visits.
Elsie Wheeler described this degree's image to Marc Edmund Jones in 1925. Until 2026-10-10 our table printed a line almost in Rudhyar's 1973 words; the present line is our own.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the sightseeing bus is about a particular kind of looking. It is shared, organised and safe, and it stays on the surface: the visitors see the sights but not the life behind them. Our keyword is "Shared viewing", and our keynote says many see the same sights together, from the outside. A placement here can be read as curiosity and a taste for variety, an enjoyment of new places and of company in seeing them. It can also be read as the first step before going deeper, the tour one takes before deciding where to return alone.
In Lynda Hill's practice Scorpio 1 is read between two neighbours, the Karmic Condition behind it and the Quest Degree ahead. Before Scorpio 1 is Libra 30, a philosopher's head marked with three bumps of knowledge; after it is Scorpio 2, perfume running from a broken bottle. The run moves from knowledge gathered within one mind, to a crowd looking outward at the world, to something fine spilling out of its container.
The degree opposite is Taurus 1, clear water running down from the mountains, our "Pure source". As a reading aid, the pair sets the source against the tour: a stream that comes straight from its origin, and a crowd that sees the world at second hand, through glass.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 0°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 1°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 0°18′ reads Scorpio 1, and so does one at Scorpio 0°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 2 after Scorpio 0°59′, or back into Libra 30 before Scorpio 0°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Scorpio 1 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Libra 30, Scorpio 2 and Taurus 1 beside it.

- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
