A philosopher's head with three bumps of knowledge

The image

The "bumps of knowledge" are the language of phrenology, the nineteenth-century belief, long abandoned, that the shape of the skull showed the strength of the mind's faculties. In the picture a philosopher's head carries three such bumps, as though years of thinking had pushed out the very bone. The image is a period one and is read here as a symbol only.

It is one of Elsie Wheeler's 1925 images; a near copy of Rudhyar's 1973 line stood here in our table until 2026-10-10.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the philosopher's head is wisdom made visible. What a person has thought about for a long time changes them, and the image pictures that change as a literal shape. Our keyword is "Accumulated wisdom", and our keynote says thought gathered over a lifetime shows in the shape of the thinker. A placement here can be read as a love of long reflection, of ideas lived with until they become part of character, and of learning that marks the whole person. The number three is left open: three lines of thought, three questions, three sides of one understanding.

For Lynda Hill, the degree before Libra 30 is its Karmic Condition and the one after it is its Quest Degree. For the closing degree of Libra, the degree before is Libra 29, people reaching across the gulf of knowledge, and the degree after is Scorpio 1, a bus taking sightseers round the sights. The run moves from the effort to join knowledge, to knowledge settled in one mind, to a crowd seeing the world from the window of a tour.

Opposite is Aries 30, a pond where a duck swims with her ducklings, our "Contentment in small bounds". As a reading aid, the pair sets two kinds of fullness side by side: the philosopher's mind grown large with thought, and a modest world, fully inhabited, that is enough for the life it holds.

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 29°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 30°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 29°41′ reads Libra 30, and so does one at Libra 29°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 1 after Libra 29°59′, or back into Libra 29 before Libra 29°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
