The image
The picture is of concealment. Somewhere off the road, in a cave, a shack or a back room, a gang of thieves keeps out of view. They are not acting yet; they are waiting, which gives the image its tension. The line describes a picture and nothing more: it is not a warning about theft or loss, and nothing on this page should be read that way.
The degree's picture was one of the 360 that Elsie Wheeler described and Marc Edmund Jones wrote down in 1925. Our old line for it followed Rudhyar's 1973 rewording closely and was replaced on 2026-10-10.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the hideout points to whatever in a situation, a group or a person stays out of sight while it waits. Our keyword is "Concealed threat", and our keynote says that what takes what is not its own waits unseen for its chance. One way to hold this image is as a reminder that not every force is visible, and that awareness of hidden motives is a kind of protection. Another is more inward: the parts of ourselves that bide their time, impatient or resentful, and move only when no one is watching. The image asks for attention, not alarm.
The degree opposite is Aries 19, a carpet that flies by magic, our "Imagination that travels". Set beside it as a reading aid, the pair contrasts two ways of getting what one wants: soaring above circumstances in the mind, and lying low beneath them waiting to seize a chance.
For Lynda Hill, the degree before Libra 19 is its Karmic Condition and the one after it is its Quest Degree. Before Libra 19 is Libra 18, two men taken into custody; after it is Libra 20, a rabbi, a figure of faithful observance. The three images run from being called to account, to hiding from it, to a life given over to keeping the tradition's terms.

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 18°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 19°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 18°54′ reads Libra 19, and so does one at Libra 18°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 20 after Libra 18°59′, or back into Libra 18 before Libra 18°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Libra 19 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Libra 18, Libra 20 and Aries 19 beside it.

- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
