Meaning
Libra opens the second half of the zodiac at the autumn equinox, Ptolemy's second equinoctial sign, when day and night are again of equal length, a balance the tradition ties to the scales. Venus rules it, and Ptolemy places Saturn's exaltation here so that it stands opposite the Sun's in Aries, the Sun having its fall in Libra in turn. Valens counts it in the airy triangle with Gemini and Aquarius.
Astrologers read Libra as balance, fairness, partnership and grace: the sign that sees the other side and wants the two sides reconciled. The shadow they name is indecision and keeping the peace at any price. Our keywords: "harmonious, fair, gracious".
In a chart
A body in Libra answers to Venus. Mars is in its detriment here, opposite its own Aries. The Sun in Libra is in its fall, a classical label that astrologers today soften into a question of how the self is found through others, not a verdict. With Libra rising, Venus is the chart ruler.
The Sun is in Libra from about 22 or 23 September to about 22 October; in 2026 it entered on 23 September at 00:05 UTC, the moment of the equinox.
The sign and the sky
Libra's start is the second of the two points where the Sun's path crosses the celestial equator, so it is fixed by the seasons, not by the stars. The scales were once the claws of the Scorpion in Greek star lore; as a constellation they now lie mostly in tropical Scorpio. The Jyotisha chart's Tula is counted from the stars, about 24° behind.
Rising
When Libra is the rising sign, our chart's own reading opens: "Libra rising approaches life with charm, courtesy and an instinct for balance and beauty." Those are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026 as a reading aid. The chart then names Venus as ruler; a Saturn or a Sun in the rising sign carries the tag of its exaltation or its fall in the chart's table.

Claims about it
-
Each Sun sign has fixed calendar dates, such as 21 March to 19 April for Aries.
falseWhat the record shows: The Sun enters each sign at a different moment each year, and the date also depends on the time zone; in 2024 to 2028 Aries began on 20 March at times from 02:17 to 20:24 UTC. The chart decides.
-
The twelve signs are the twelve constellations, each 30° wide.
falseWhat the record shows: The signs are equal divisions of the ecliptic; the constellations are star figures of different sizes, and by the boundaries astronomers drew in 1930 the Sun crosses thirteen of them. The names were shared from the start, the shapes never.
-
Tropical astrology is wrong because its signs no longer match the constellations.
falseWhat the record shows: The tropical zodiac is defined from the March equinox and keeps each sign with its season by definition. The two zodiacs measure the same positions from different starting points; whether either means anything is a separate question.
