Meaning
Aquarius is the fixed air of mid winter, the water-bearer. Ptolemy gives Saturn both Capricorn and Aquarius without dividing them; Lilly in 1647 calls Aquarius Saturn's day house. Valens counts it in the airy triangle with Gemini and Libra. No planet is exalted here in Ptolemy's table.
Uranus came later. John Varley gave it Aquarius in 1828, the attribution was argued over through the nineteenth century, and Alan Leo could still write in 1909 that astrologers had given Uranus no sign; it became the modern consensus only in the twentieth century, and the traditional revival does not use it. We name Saturn first and Uranus beside it.
Astrologers read Aquarius as independence, originality, ideals and the life of groups and causes; it thinks in principles and keeps a certain distance. The shadow they name is detachment and contrariness. Our keywords: "independent, inventive, humanitarian".
In a chart
A body in Aquarius answers to Saturn, and in modern readings to Uranus as well. The Sun is in its detriment here, opposite its own Leo. With Aquarius rising, Saturn is the chart ruler and Uranus is named as co-ruler.
The Sun is in Aquarius from about 19 or 20 January to about 18 February; in 2026 it entered on 20 January at 01:45 UTC.
The sign and the sky
The sign is the eleventh twelfth of the ecliptic from the equinox, not the constellation of the Water-bearer. The "Age of Aquarius" is a different idea again, about the equinox moving through the star figures, and its start depends on where one draws a boundary in the sky; we do not date it. The Jyotisha chart's Kumbha, the pot, is counted from the stars about 24° behind.
Rising
When Aquarius is the rising sign, our chart's own reading opens: "An Aquarius Ascendant meets the world as a true individual, friendly yet a little detached, with an independent and inventive manner." Those are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026 as a reading aid. The chart then names Saturn as ruler and Uranus beside it as the modern co-ruler.

Claims about it
-
Each Sun sign has fixed calendar dates, such as 21 March to 19 April for Aries.
falseWhat the record shows: The Sun enters each sign at a different moment each year, and the date also depends on the time zone; in 2024 to 2028 Aries began on 20 March at times from 02:17 to 20:24 UTC. The chart decides.
-
The twelve signs are the twelve constellations, each 30° wide.
falseWhat the record shows: The signs are equal divisions of the ecliptic; the constellations are star figures of different sizes, and by the boundaries astronomers drew in 1930 the Sun crosses thirteen of them. The names were shared from the start, the shapes never.
-
Tropical astrology is wrong because its signs no longer match the constellations.
falseWhat the record shows: The tropical zodiac is defined from the March equinox and keeps each sign with its season by definition. The two zodiacs measure the same positions from different starting points; whether either means anything is a separate question.
-
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto rule Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.
disputedWhat the record shows: A modern attribution made in stages after the three discoveries; the traditional rulers are Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and the traditional revival keeps them. We name the traditional ruler first and the modern co-ruler beside it.
