Meaning
Leo holds the heat of high summer steady. Ptolemy gives it to the Sun because Leo and Cancer are the signs nearest the summer zenith, and so the two lights take one house each, Leo for the Sun and Cancer for the Moon, while the five planets take two signs apiece outward from them. No planet is exalted in Leo in his table. Valens counts it in the fiery triangle with Aries and Sagittarius.
Astrologers read Leo as warmth, creativity, generosity and the wish to be seen and to shine; it leads by presence and gives freely when it is honoured. The shadow they name is pride and a need for applause. Our keywords: "warm, expressive, generous, proud".
In a chart
A body in Leo answers to the Sun. Saturn, the planet of limits and cold in the old scheme, is in its detriment here, opposite its own Aquarius. With Leo rising, the Sun rules the chart, and the reading of the whole chart then leans on the Sun's sign and house; the sample chart on our system page is one such, with Leo rising and the Sun in the last degree of Capricorn.
The Sun itself is in Leo from about 22 or 23 July to about 22 August; in 2026 it entered on 22 July at 19:13 UTC.
The sign and the sky
The sign is the fifth twelfth of the ecliptic from the equinox; the constellation of the Lion, with its bright star Regulus, now lies mostly in tropical Virgo. The Jyotisha chart's Simha is counted from the stars, about 24° behind.
Rising
When Leo is the rising sign, our chart's own reading opens: "Leo rising brings a warm, confident and expressive presence that often draws attention without trying." Those are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026 as a reading aid. The chart then names the Sun as ruler, as in the sample chart on our system page.

Claims about it
-
Each Sun sign has fixed calendar dates, such as 21 March to 19 April for Aries.
falseWhat the record shows: The Sun enters each sign at a different moment each year, and the date also depends on the time zone; in 2024 to 2028 Aries began on 20 March at times from 02:17 to 20:24 UTC. The chart decides.
-
The twelve signs are the twelve constellations, each 30° wide.
falseWhat the record shows: The signs are equal divisions of the ecliptic; the constellations are star figures of different sizes, and by the boundaries astronomers drew in 1930 the Sun crosses thirteen of them. The names were shared from the start, the shapes never.
-
Tropical astrology is wrong because its signs no longer match the constellations.
falseWhat the record shows: The tropical zodiac is defined from the March equinox and keeps each sign with its season by definition. The two zodiacs measure the same positions from different starting points; whether either means anything is a separate question.
