Meaning
Capricorn begins at the winter solstice, the second of Ptolemy's tropical signs, where the Sun stops its southward run and turns back. Saturn rules it, and Ptolemy puts Mars's exaltation here, opposite Jupiter's in Cancer, with Jupiter's fall in Capricorn in turn. Valens counts it in the earthy triangle with Taurus and Virgo.
Astrologers read Capricorn as ambition, discipline, patience and structure: the long climb, the responsibility accepted, the thing built to last. The shadow they name is rigidity and coldness. Our keywords: "ambitious, disciplined, practical".
In a chart
A body in Capricorn answers to Saturn. The Moon is in its detriment here, opposite its own Cancer, and Jupiter in its fall, while Mars has its exaltation. With Capricorn rising, Saturn is the chart ruler.
The Sun is in Capricorn from about 21 or 22 December to about 19 January; in 2026 it enters on 21 December at 20:50 UTC. A birth on 19 or 20 January can fall on either side of the change, as it does in the sample chart on our system page, whose Sun stands at 29°55′ of Capricorn: a table of dates would have called it Aquarius.
The sign and the sky
Capricorn's start is the December solstice, so the sign belongs to the seasons and not to the faint constellation of the Sea-goat, which now lies mostly in tropical Aquarius. In the Jyotisha chart Makara is counted from the stars, about 24° behind, and its creature is drawn as a sea animal rather than a goat.
Rising
When Capricorn is the rising sign, our chart's own reading opens: "With Capricorn rising, life is approached seriously and with a sense of purpose, often giving an impression of maturity beyond one's years." Those are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026 as a reading aid. The chart then names Saturn as ruler, the slowest of the classical planets, so the reading leans on the house Saturn stands in as much as on its sign.

Claims about it
-
Each Sun sign has fixed calendar dates, such as 21 March to 19 April for Aries.
falseWhat the record shows: The Sun enters each sign at a different moment each year, and the date also depends on the time zone; in 2024 to 2028 Aries began on 20 March at times from 02:17 to 20:24 UTC. The chart decides.
-
The twelve signs are the twelve constellations, each 30° wide.
falseWhat the record shows: The signs are equal divisions of the ecliptic; the constellations are star figures of different sizes, and by the boundaries astronomers drew in 1930 the Sun crosses thirteen of them. The names were shared from the start, the shapes never.
-
Tropical astrology is wrong because its signs no longer match the constellations.
falseWhat the record shows: The tropical zodiac is defined from the March equinox and keeps each sign with its season by definition. The two zodiacs measure the same positions from different starting points; whether either means anything is a separate question.
