Meaning
Cancer begins at the solstice, when the Sun reaches its farthest north and turns, which is why Ptolemy calls it a tropical sign; our word "tropical" for the whole zodiac comes from the same turning points. It is the Moon's own house, the most northerly sign with Leo, and Ptolemy puts Jupiter's exaltation here. Valens counts it among the moist signs, with Scorpio and Pisces.
Astrologers read Cancer as care, memory, home and belonging: the instinct to protect what is one's own and to make a safe place for others. Feeling runs close to the surface, and the shell is there for a reason. The shadow they name is moodiness and clinging. Our keywords: "nurturing, protective, intuitive".
In a chart
A body in Cancer answers to the Moon, so a reading of it turns to the Moon's own sign, house and phase. Saturn is in its detriment here and Mars in its fall: the tradition's cold planet and its hasty one both sit uneasily in the sign of nurture. With Cancer rising, the Moon is the chart ruler, and the Moon's phase, which our chart names, becomes part of the ruler's story.
The Sun is in Cancer from about 20 or 21 June to about 22 July; in 2026 it entered on 21 June at 08:25 UTC, the moment of the solstice.
The sign and the sky
Because the sign starts at the solstice, its beginning is a fact of the seasons, not of the stars: in the southern hemisphere the same moment is midwinter, and the sign keeps the name it was given in the north. The faint star figure of the Crab now sits mostly in tropical Leo, and the Jyotisha chart's Karka is counted from the stars about 24° back.
Rising
When Cancer is the rising sign, our chart's own reading opens: "A Cancer Ascendant approaches life with sensitivity and care, often sensing the mood of a room before speaking." Those are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026 as a reading aid. The chart then names the Moon as ruler, so the Moon is read twice over: as a luminary and as the lord of the chart.

Claims about it
-
Each Sun sign has fixed calendar dates, such as 21 March to 19 April for Aries.
falseWhat the record shows: The Sun enters each sign at a different moment each year, and the date also depends on the time zone; in 2024 to 2028 Aries began on 20 March at times from 02:17 to 20:24 UTC. The chart decides.
-
The twelve signs are the twelve constellations, each 30° wide.
falseWhat the record shows: The signs are equal divisions of the ecliptic; the constellations are star figures of different sizes, and by the boundaries astronomers drew in 1930 the Sun crosses thirteen of them. The names were shared from the start, the shapes never.
-
Tropical astrology is wrong because its signs no longer match the constellations.
falseWhat the record shows: The tropical zodiac is defined from the March equinox and keeps each sign with its season by definition. The two zodiacs measure the same positions from different starting points; whether either means anything is a separate question.
