Meaning
Aries starts the count. Its 0° is defined by the March equinox, the moment day overtakes night in the northern hemisphere, and the tradition has read that moment into the sign as a burst of beginning. Ptolemy calls it equinoctial, gives it to Mars as a house and puts the Sun's exaltation here, because, he says, the Sun is then passing into the lengthening half of the year; Valens counts it in the fiery triangle with Leo and Sagittarius.
Astrologers since have read Aries as initiative, courage and directness: the will to go first, to act before deliberating, to start rather than to finish. They name its shadow as impatience and a short fuse. Our own keyword line for the sign is "bold, pioneering, direct", written in 2026 as a reading aid.
In a chart
Any body in Aries is read as working in Mars's way, so the astrologer looks next at where Mars itself stands: a Venus in Aries, for instance, is in the sign of its detriment and answers to Mars. Saturn, slow and cautious in the tradition's eyes, is in its fall here. When Aries rises, Mars is the chart ruler.
The Sun is in Aries for about a month from the March equinox, roughly 20 March to 19 April, but the moment it enters moves from year to year and the date depends on the time zone, so the chart, not a table of dates, decides. In 2026 the Sun entered Aries on 20 March at 14:46 UTC.
The sign and the sky
The sign is not the constellation of the Ram. It is the first twelfth of the ecliptic counted from the equinox, and precession has carried the stars about 24° on since the zodiac was first counted; in the Jyotisha chart the sign of the same name, Mesha, is counted from the stars, so most people with the Sun early in tropical Aries have it in sidereal Meena, the sign before. Neither is the "real" sign: they measure from different starting points.
Rising
When Aries is the rising sign, our chart's own reading opens: "An Aries Ascendant meets life head on, with a direct, energetic manner and a readiness to take the first step." Those are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026 as a reading aid. Then the chart names Mars as ruler and reads its sign and house next.

Claims about it
-
Each Sun sign has fixed calendar dates, such as 21 March to 19 April for Aries.
falseWhat the record shows: The Sun enters each sign at a different moment each year, and the date also depends on the time zone; in 2024 to 2028 Aries began on 20 March at times from 02:17 to 20:24 UTC. The chart decides.
-
The twelve signs are the twelve constellations, each 30° wide.
falseWhat the record shows: The signs are equal divisions of the ecliptic; the constellations are star figures of different sizes, and by the boundaries astronomers drew in 1930 the Sun crosses thirteen of them. The names were shared from the start, the shapes never.
-
Tropical astrology is wrong because its signs no longer match the constellations.
falseWhat the record shows: The tropical zodiac is defined from the March equinox and keeps each sign with its season by definition. The two zodiacs measure the same positions from different starting points; whether either means anything is a separate question.
