Meaning
Pisces closes the zodiac at the end of the northern winter, two fish swimming opposite ways, and Ptolemy's last bicorporeal sign. He gives it to Jupiter; Lilly in 1647 calls it Jupiter's night house. Ptolemy puts Venus's exaltation here, where, he says, a dampness first becomes perceptible in the air, and Mercury has its fall in Pisces. Valens counts it among the moist signs with Cancer and Scorpio.
Neptune, found in 1846, was linked with Pisces by the end of the nineteenth century: Alan Leo wrote in 1899 that it was "supposed to govern Pisces", and the rulership lists gave it the sign by 1936. The traditional revival keeps Jupiter alone; we name Jupiter first and Neptune beside it.
Astrologers read Pisces as compassion, imagination, intuition and a porous boundary between self and world. The shadow they name is escapism and drift. Our keywords: "compassionate, imaginative, intuitive".
In a chart
A body in Pisces answers to Jupiter, and in modern readings to Neptune. Mercury is both in its detriment and in its fall here, the only planet with both debilities in one sign, opposite its double strength in Virgo. With Pisces rising, Jupiter is the chart ruler and Neptune is named beside it.
The Sun is in Pisces from about 18 or 19 February to about 20 March; in 2026 it entered on 18 February at 15:52 UTC.
The sign and the sky
The sign is the last twelfth before the March equinox. The equinox itself now lies among the stars of the constellation of the Fishes, which is what the talk of the passing "Age of Pisces" refers to; the age's boundaries are a matter of choice, not of the sign. The Jyotisha chart's Meena is counted from the stars, about 24° behind.
Rising
When Pisces is the rising sign, our chart's own reading opens: "Pisces rising approaches life with gentleness, imagination and a sensitive, receptive presence." Those are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026 as a reading aid. The chart then names Jupiter as ruler and Neptune beside it as the modern co-ruler.

Claims about it
-
Each Sun sign has fixed calendar dates, such as 21 March to 19 April for Aries.
falseWhat the record shows: The Sun enters each sign at a different moment each year, and the date also depends on the time zone; in 2024 to 2028 Aries began on 20 March at times from 02:17 to 20:24 UTC. The chart decides.
-
The twelve signs are the twelve constellations, each 30° wide.
falseWhat the record shows: The signs are equal divisions of the ecliptic; the constellations are star figures of different sizes, and by the boundaries astronomers drew in 1930 the Sun crosses thirteen of them. The names were shared from the start, the shapes never.
-
Tropical astrology is wrong because its signs no longer match the constellations.
falseWhat the record shows: The tropical zodiac is defined from the March equinox and keeps each sign with its season by definition. The two zodiacs measure the same positions from different starting points; whether either means anything is a separate question.
-
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto rule Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.
disputedWhat the record shows: A modern attribution made in stages after the three discoveries; the traditional rulers are Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and the traditional revival keeps them. We name the traditional ruler first and the modern co-ruler beside it.
