Meaning
The twelfth house is the last of the cycle and the place just above the eastern horizon, the part of the sky that has just risen before the Ascendant. The old scheme counted it the least fortunate of all, cadent and turned away from the rising degree, and Lilly ranks it last in strength. Valens calls it the Bad Daimon, the counterpart of the eleventh; Saturn has its joy here.
Lilly gives the twelfth house private enemies, great cattle, sorrow and self-undoing, and secret informers, with a further item on imprisonment that we leave out here. Modern astrology reads it very differently: solitude, retreat, dreams, the unconscious and the spiritual life, what goes on out of sight. Our keywords are "solitude, unconscious, spirituality".
In a chart
A planet in the twelfth house is read as working quietly or privately: Neptune, named as a modern co-ruler of the house's natural sign, as imagination turned inward, the Moon as feeling kept to oneself. A planet in the rising sign but a few degrees before the Ascendant is in the twelfth house by Placidus and in the first by whole signs, so the house system matters most at this boundary.
Opposite it lies the sixth, Valens's Bad Fortune; the two cadent places that make no aspect to the Ascendant were read together, outward duty and inward retreat.
Across the traditions
The pairing with Pisces, and with Jupiter and Neptune, is a modern teaching device. In whole-sign houses the twelfth house is the sign before the rising sign; Jyotisha's twelfth bhava follows the same count. The old readings of this house as confinement and enmity belong to the tradition's history; our pages never read a chart for them.

Claims about it
-
The chart foretells illness, accidents, money and the outcome of lawsuits.
unverifiedWhat the record shows: The tradition makes such claims; we never do. Our pages and readings describe themes and tendencies, never outcomes.
-
There is one correct house system, and a planet's house is a fact of the sky.
disputedWhat the record shows: A planet's house depends on the division chosen: between Placidus and Whole Sign a median of twelve of sixteen objects changed house in our 56 test charts. We default to Placidus and show the system on the chart.
