Meaning
The eighth house follows the Descendant, above the horizon, and is succedent, tenth in Lilly's ranking of strength. In the old scheme it was unfortunate for the same reason as the sixth and the twelfth: counted by signs, it stands at no Ptolemaic aspect to the Ascendant.
Lilly's list for the eighth house is about death and the estates of the dead. We name that as the tradition's reading and leave every item of it out; our pages and readings never speak of death, legacies or debts from a chart.
Modern astrology has turned the house inward. It reads the eighth as intimacy and trust, what is shared with others rather than owned alone, psychological depth, and the cycles of ending and renewal that a life goes through. Our keywords are "intimacy, shared resources, transformation".
In a chart
A planet in the eighth house is read for how a person meets closeness and change: Pluto, named as a modern co-ruler of the house's natural sign, as depth and intensity, the Moon as feeling that runs deep and private. Our chart gives each planet a reading for this house in our own words.
Opposite it lies the second house, and the two are read as a pair: what is one's own and what is held with others. The pairing with Scorpio, and with Mars and Pluto, is a modern teaching device.
Across the traditions
In whole-sign houses the eighth house is the eighth sign from the rising sign; Valens counts the places that way, and Jyotisha's eighth bhava too. Whatever the system, a planet near the cusp can move between the seventh, eighth and ninth houses when the system changes, which our chart lets you see with one tap.

Claims about it
-
The chart foretells illness, accidents, money and the outcome of lawsuits.
unverifiedWhat the record shows: The tradition makes such claims; we never do. Our pages and readings describe themes and tendencies, never outcomes.
-
There is one correct house system, and a planet's house is a fact of the sky.
disputedWhat the record shows: A planet's house depends on the division chosen: between Placidus and Whole Sign a median of twelve of sixteen objects changed house in our 56 test charts. We default to Placidus and show the system on the chart.
