Meaning
The eleventh house follows the Midheaven, high in the day side of the chart. Valens calls it the Good Daimon, the good spirit, and counts it the most fortunate of the places after the angles; Jupiter has its joy here in the medieval scheme, which Lilly repeats. In Lilly's ranking of strength it comes fifth, the best of the succedent houses.
Lilly gives it friends and friendship, hope, trust and confidence, praise or blame and the faithfulness of friends, and for a king his favourites, counsellors and allies. Modern astrology reads it as friendships, groups, community, causes and hopes for the future. Our keywords are "friends, community, hopes".
In a chart
A planet in the eleventh house is read for how a person belongs to groups and what they hope for with others: Saturn, the house's natural ruler in modern teaching, as steadiness in long friendships, Uranus, its modern co-ruler, as a pull towards causes. The sample chart on our system page has its Moon in the eleventh house by Placidus, read as finding security among friends; switch to whole-sign houses and the same Moon is in the twelfth, with another reading.
Opposite it lies the fifth, Valens's Good Fortune: the eleventh for hopes shared with others, the fifth for one's own delights.
Across the traditions
In whole-sign houses the eleventh house is the eleventh sign from the rising sign, the count Valens and Jyotisha both use. The pairing with Aquarius, and with Saturn and Uranus, is a modern teaching device of the twentieth century.
Our reading
Our chart's own line for the house covers friendships, groups, community and hopes for the future, and each planet has a reading here in our own words, under each house system.

There is one correct house system, and a planet's house is a fact of the sky.
disputedWhat the record shows: A planet's house depends on the division chosen: between Placidus and Whole Sign a median of twelve of sixteen objects changed house in our 56 test charts. We default to Placidus and show the system on the chart.
