Meaning
The ninth house lies just before the Midheaven, cadent and seventh in Lilly's ranking of strength. Valens calls it the place of the God, the Sun, which has its joy here, opposite the Moon's joy in the third: day and night, the far and the near.
Lilly in 1647 gives it voyages and long journeys over the sea, religion and the clergy, dreams and visions, foreign countries, books and learning, and the kindred of one's spouse. Modern astrology reads it as philosophy, faith, higher education, travel abroad and the search for meaning. Our keywords are "beliefs, travel, higher learning".
In a chart
A planet in the ninth house is read for how a person reaches beyond the familiar, in study, belief or travel: Jupiter, the natural ruler in modern teaching, as breadth and conviction, Mercury as the scholar's curiosity. Our chart gives each planet a reading for this house in our own words.
The third and ninth houses are read as a pair: the near and the far, letters and books, the street and the world.
Across the traditions
In whole-sign houses the ninth house is the ninth sign from the rising sign, which always shares the rising sign's element, like the fifth; that is one reason the Hellenistic writers counted both good places. In Placidus, our default, the Midheaven is the tenth cusp, so the ninth house ends at it; in whole-sign houses the Midheaven can fall inside the ninth. The pairing with Sagittarius and Jupiter is a modern teaching device.
Our reading
Our chart's own line for the house speaks of philosophy, faith, higher education, long journeys and the search for meaning. It is the house in which Lilly put dreams and visions, and modern astrology keeps that sense of reaching past the everyday.

Claims about it

There is one correct house system, and a planet's house is a fact of the sky.
disputedWhat the record shows: A planet's house depends on the division chosen: between Placidus and Whole Sign a median of twelve of sixteen objects changed house in our 56 test charts. We default to Placidus and show the system on the chart.
