Meaning
Jupiter circles the Sun in 11.86 years and so spends about a year in each sign; its sign is shared by everyone born in the same year or so, and marks a birth year more than a birthday.
Ptolemy calls it benefic and temperate, masculine and diurnal, and gives it Sagittarius and Pisces as houses, its exaltation in Cancer and its fall in Capricorn; the medieval writers add its detriments in Gemini and Virgo. Valens reads it for children, honour, plenty and judgement.
Modern astrology reads Jupiter as growth, faith, generosity and the search for meaning, with excess as its shadow. Our keywords are "growth, faith, generosity". Its old title of greater benefic is history: our readings never treat it as a promise of good fortune.
In a chart
When Sagittarius rises, Jupiter rules the chart; when Pisces rises, Jupiter is the traditional ruler and our chart names Neptune beside it. Jupiter takes the planets' orbs in our aspect policy. In the medieval scheme of the houses' joys Jupiter rejoices in the eleventh house, a placement Lilly repeats.
Exaltation and other names
Here the lists part: the medieval writers put Jupiter's exaltation at 15° of Cancer, the Brihat Jataka at 5° of Cancer, and al-Biruni notes the difference himself. The Golden Dawn gave Jupiter the Wheel of Fortune. In Jyotisha it is Guru, or Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods and the greatest natural benefic of that tradition.
In our readings
Our chart's own line for Jupiter reads: "Jupiter represents growth, optimism, wisdom and the search for meaning." Beside it the chart gives a reading for Jupiter in each sign and house. Because Jupiter spends a year in a sign, the sign reading is shared with everyone born that year, so the house and the aspects carry the more personal part. As chart ruler it gets a line of its own: "A Jupiter-ruled chart, for Sagittarius rising and traditionally Pisces rising, tends to seek growth, meaning and wider horizons." These are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026.

Claims about it
-
Each planet is strongest at one exact degree of exaltation.
disputedWhat the record shows: Ptolemy gives signs only. The degrees are a later layer and differ between sources: the medieval lists put the Sun at 19 Aries, the Brihat Jataka at 10 Aries.
