Meaning
Mercury circles the Sun in 88 days and, seen from the Earth, never strays far from it, so it is usually in the Sun's sign or the one beside it. Three times a year it seems to stop and move backwards for a few weeks: its retrograde periods, which our chart marks in words.
Ptolemy gives it two houses, Gemini and Virgo, and its exaltation in Virgo, the one sign where a planet is both ruler and exalted; its fall is in Pisces, where the medieval writers also put a detriment, with the other in Sagittarius. He calls it common in every way: masculine or feminine, diurnal or nocturnal, benefic or malefic according to its position and the planets it meets. Valens reads it for speech, learning, trade and brothers.
Modern astrology reads Mercury as the mind, communication and the way information is taken in and passed on. Our keywords are "mind, communication, learning".
In a chart
Because it is so close to the Sun, Mercury rarely makes a major aspect to it: never a sextile, square, trine or opposition, only a conjunction. When Gemini or Virgo rises, Mercury is the chart ruler, and it then always sits in or near the Sun's sign. Mercury takes the planets' orbs in our aspect policy, 8° for a conjunction, square, trine or opposition, unless the Moon is the other body.
Exaltation by degree
The medieval lists and the Brihat Jataka both put Mercury's exaltation at 15° of Virgo; Ptolemy names only the sign. The Golden Dawn gave Mercury the Magician, and in the Jyotisha chart it is Budha.
In our readings
Our chart's own line for Mercury reads: "Mercury represents thinking, speech, learning and the way information is gathered and shared." Beside it the chart gives a reading for Mercury in each sign and house, and marks it in words when it is retrograde. As chart ruler it gets a line of its own: "A Mercury-ruled chart, belonging to Gemini or Virgo rising, tends to move through life by thinking, learning, talking and making connections." These are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026.

Claims about it
-
Each planet is strongest at one exact degree of exaltation.
disputedWhat the record shows: Ptolemy gives signs only. The degrees are a later layer and differ between sources: the medieval lists put the Sun at 19 Aries, the Brihat Jataka at 10 Aries.
