Meaning
Venus circles the Sun in 224.7 days and stays close to it in the sky, never more than about 47° away, so it is seen before dawn or after sunset: the morning star or the evening star. In a chart it is always within two signs of the Sun.
Ptolemy calls it benefic, feminine and nocturnal, gives it Taurus and Libra as houses, its exaltation in Pisces and its fall in Virgo; the medieval writers add its detriments in Scorpio and Aries. Valens reads it for desire, love, friendship and the arts.
Modern astrology reads Venus as love, attraction, beauty, pleasure and what a person values, and softens the old "benefic" into a supportive tone rather than a promise. Our keywords are "love, beauty, values".
In a chart
When Taurus or Libra rises, Venus rules the chart. Since it can never be more than about 47° from the Sun, the only major aspect it can make to it is the conjunction. Like Mercury it takes the planets' orbs in our aspect policy unless the Sun or Moon is the other body. Its classical label as a benefic belongs to the history of the art.
Exaltation and other names
The medieval lists and the Brihat Jataka both place Venus's exaltation at 27° of Pisces. The Golden Dawn gave it the Empress. In Jyotisha it is Shukra, the teacher of the asuras, and the lord of the longest period of the Vimshottari dasha, twenty years.
In our readings
Our chart's own line for Venus reads: "Venus represents love, attraction, beauty, pleasure and what one values most." Beside it the chart gives a reading for Venus in each sign and house. As chart ruler it gets a line of its own: "When Venus rules the chart, as it does for Taurus and Libra rising, relationships, beauty, values and harmony tend to sit at the center of life." These are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026.

Each planet is strongest at one exact degree of exaltation.
disputedWhat the record shows: Ptolemy gives signs only. The degrees are a later layer and differ between sources: the medieval lists put the Sun at 19 Aries, the Brihat Jataka at 10 Aries.
