Meaning
Saturn circles the Sun in 29.4 years, the longest of the seven bodies the ancient astronomers could see, and stays about two and a half years in a sign. Its return to its natal place at about 29 and again at about 58 is the best-known planetary cycle of modern astrology; it is a transit, which our natal chart does not compute.
Ptolemy calls it malefic from its excess of cold, masculine and diurnal. He gives it Capricorn and Aquarius as houses, its exaltation in Libra and its fall in Aries; the medieval writers add its detriments in Cancer and Leo. Valens reads it for delay, old age and hard labour.
Modern astrology reads Saturn as structure, responsibility, limits and the mastery that comes with time, and treats the old "malefic" as the weight of what must be built slowly. Our keywords are "structure, discipline, time".
In a chart
When Capricorn rises, Saturn rules the chart; when Aquarius rises, Saturn is the traditional ruler and our chart names Uranus beside it. In the medieval scheme of the houses' joys Saturn rejoices in the twelfth house. The old texts read Saturn for losses and long illnesses; we record that as history and never read a chart for them.
Exaltation and other names
The medieval lists put Saturn's exaltation at 21° of Libra, the Brihat Jataka at 20° of Libra. The Golden Dawn gave Saturn the World, and in Jyotisha it is Shani.
In our readings
Our chart's own line for Saturn reads: "Saturn represents structure, responsibility, limits and the mastery that comes with time." Beside it the chart gives a reading for Saturn in each sign and house. With two and a half years in a sign, Saturn's sign is shared by a whole school year, and astrologers lean on its house and aspects for the personal part. As chart ruler it gets a line of its own: "When Saturn rules the chart, for Capricorn rising and traditionally Aquarius rising, structure, responsibility and the long view tend to shape the life path." These are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026.

Claims about it
-
Each planet is strongest at one exact degree of exaltation.
disputedWhat the record shows: Ptolemy gives signs only. The degrees are a later layer and differ between sources: the medieval lists put the Sun at 19 Aries, the Brihat Jataka at 10 Aries.
-
The chart foretells illness, accidents, money and the outcome of lawsuits.
unverifiedWhat the record shows: The tradition makes such claims; we never do. Our pages and readings describe themes and tendencies, never outcomes.
