Jyotisha Chart (Sidereal) · Graha 7 of 9

Shani, the slow servant and the lessons of time

Shani, Saturn, is the slowest of the visible grahas. The Brihat Jataka calls it sorrow to the cosmic person and the servant among the grahas; it rules Makara and Kumbha, is exalted at 20° Tula, and casts its drishti on the third and tenth rashis too.

Meaning

In the Brihat Jataka's cosmic person "Saturn is sorrow", and among the grahas Saturn is the servant (II.1, Iyer 1885). Its colour is black, its direction the west and its element air; among its names are Manda and Suryaputra, "son of the Sun".

It is the slowest of the seven visible grahas, and modern readings make it the graha of time itself: discipline and patience, labour and endurance, delay, and what is learned slowly. Our chart's text for its period speaks of responsibility and of foundations built by steady effort.

It is a natural malefic in the Brihat Jataka, a description of the graha's nature in the system. In the chart it is written Sa.

Rashis and dignities

Shani rules Makara and Kumbha, and its moolatrikona is Kumbha. It is exalted at the 20th degree of Tula and debilitated in Mesha (Brihat Jataka I.6, I.13 and I.14). Besides the seventh rashi from itself, its drishti also falls on the third and the tenth. It is the Vimshottari lord of Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada.

Its period

In the Vimshottari dasha Shani holds nineteen of the cycle's 120 years, the eighth period in the order Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budha. A person whose Moon stands in Pushya, Anuradha or Uttara Bhadrapada at birth begins life in Shani's period, counting only the part still to run; for any other Moon it comes later in the sequence. Each period is divided into nine sub-periods in the same order.

Our chart's reading of the period, in our words: "The nineteen-year Shani mahadasha tends to focus on responsibility, discipline, patience and steady work. It often asks for maturity and perseverance, and the effort invested during these years can build lasting foundations." The tradition's reading of this period, not a prediction of events, and not advice on health, money, legal matters or relationships. The dates follow the chart's conventions, years of 365.25 days and the Lahiri ayanamsa; other tools differ from ours by days.
