Meaning
The Brihat Jataka opens its account of the grahas with the figure of Time as a person, the Kalapurusha: "To the Kalapurusha, the Sun is the soul, the Moon is the mind." Of the grahas, it goes on, the Sun and Moon are the kings (II.1, in Iyer's translation of 1885).
The same text gives the Sun its colour, "red and dark-brown", its direction, the east, and its element, fire, and counts it among the malefics by nature, as the hot and drying graha, though it is also the giver of light. Modern readings make Surya the graha of authority, vitality, the father, the self and one's standing in the world: what a person is at the centre. They are the tradition's associations; our chart states them as such.
In the chart it is written Su. It is the same body as the Sun of the Western chart, measured from another starting point, so the two charts usually put it in neighbouring signs.
Rashis and dignities
Surya rules one rashi, Simha, which is also its moolatrikona, the part of its own rashi where the tradition counts it strongest. It is exalted at the 10th degree of Mesha and debilitated in the seventh rashi from there, Tula, at the same degree (Brihat Jataka I.6, I.13 and I.14). Its drishti falls on the seventh rashi from itself only. It is the Vimshottari lord of Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha.
Its period
In the Vimshottari dasha Surya holds six of the cycle's 120 years, the third period in the order Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budha. A person whose Moon stands in Krittika, Uttara Phalguni or Uttara Ashadha at birth begins life in Surya's period, counting only the part still to run; for any other Moon it comes later in the sequence. Each period is divided into nine sub-periods in the same order.
Our chart's reading of the period, in our words: "The six-year Surya mahadasha tends to highlight identity, authority, purpose and relationships with figures of leadership. It often invites stepping into one's own light, developing confidence and clarifying a sense of direction." The tradition's reading of this period, not a prediction of events, and not advice on health, money, legal matters or relationships. The dates follow the chart's conventions, years of 365.25 days and the Lahiri ayanamsa; other tools differ from ours by days.
