Meaning
The Moon circles the zodiac in 27.3 days, and from new moon to new moon in 29.5. That speed makes it the body most sensitive to the birth time: without one, our chart is cast for noon, and the Moon can then be up to about 7° from where it really was, enough to change its sign for about one birth in four.
Ptolemy makes it the luminary of the night, feminine and nocturnal, and counts it among the benefics. Its house is Cancer and its exaltation Taurus, where its first crescent appears after the spring new moon; its fall is in Scorpio and its detriment, for the medieval writers, in Capricorn. Valens reads it for conception, the mother and the home.
Modern astrology reads the Moon as feelings, instinct, needs and what makes a person feel safe. Our keywords are "emotions, needs, instinct".
The phase
Our chart names the Moon's phase as one of the eight that Dane Rudhyar described in The Lunation Cycle (1967), each a 45° slice of the Sun-Moon angle: New, Crescent, First Quarter, Gibbous, Full, Disseminating, Last Quarter and Balsamic. We present them as Rudhyar's, and we call the slices from 0° to 45° and from 180° to 225° "New" and "Full" rather than "New Moon" and "Full Moon", because the names stand for slices, not instants. The sample chart on our system page has a Gibbous Moon, 96 percent lit.
Elsewhere
The medieval exaltation degree is 3° of Taurus, and the Brihat Jataka gives the same; it is one of the few on which the lists agree. In Jyotisha the Moon, Chandra, matters more than any other body: its nakshatra starts the Vimshottari dasha and its sign is the one most people name as theirs.
In our readings
Our chart's own line for the Moon reads: "The Moon represents feelings, instincts, emotional needs and what brings a sense of comfort and safety." Beside it the chart gives the Moon's sign and house readings and names its phase; with no birth time it warns when the Moon's sign is in doubt. As chart ruler it gets a line of its own: "With the Moon as chart ruler, as for Cancer rising, feelings, instincts and the need for emotional security strongly guide the life path." These are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026.

Claims about it
-
Each planet is strongest at one exact degree of exaltation.
disputedWhat the record shows: Ptolemy gives signs only. The degrees are a later layer and differ between sources: the medieval lists put the Sun at 19 Aries, the Brihat Jataka at 10 Aries.
