Meaning
On 23 September 1846 Johann Gottfried Galle at the Berlin observatory found Neptune within about a degree of the position Urbain Le Verrier had worked out from the pull it exerted on Uranus: the first planet found by prediction. Like Uranus it has no classical dignities.
It circles the Sun in 163.7 years and spends about fourteen years in a sign, so its sign marks a generation; astrologers read the personal part of it from its house and aspects.
Modern astrology reads Neptune as imagination, compassion, spirituality and the dissolving of boundaries, with illusion as its shadow. Our keywords are "dreams, compassion, imagination".
A ruler by supposition
By the end of the nineteenth century astrologers were linking Neptune with Pisces; Alan Leo in 1899 still put it as a supposition, the planet being "supposed to govern Pisces", and rulership lists gave it the sign by 1936. The traditional revival keeps Jupiter. We name Jupiter as Pisces's ruler and Neptune beside it.
Glyph and correspondences
Neptune's glyph is the trident, ♆. Paul Foster Case in 1933 set it beside the Hanged Man, a pairing the Golden Dawn's Book T does not make; it gives that trump the element of water.
In our readings
Our chart's own line for Neptune reads: "Neptune represents imagination, compassion, spirituality and the longing for something beyond the everyday." The chart gives Neptune a reading in each sign and house like any planet. Its sign is shared by everyone born in the same fourteen years or so, so we read the house and the aspects as the personal part and say so. As chart ruler it gets a line of its own: "When Neptune serves as the modern ruler of Pisces rising, imagination, compassion and spiritual longing tend to shape the life path." These are EsoTerrier's words, written in 2026.
