The image

The picture is a man at the moment he is struck. Apoplexy is an old-fashioned word for being felled all at once, and the line gives only that: the man and the blow, with no setting, no cause and no aftermath. What the picture shows is the suddenness, the way a figure in full motion is brought to a halt by something that had been building unseen.

Meaning

The tradition reads degree images as symbols, and a stark picture like this one is read for what it stands for. Our keyword is Overreach, and our keynote says that pressure built up inside breaks out all at once and forces a halt. The image sits at the very start of Leo, and it opens the sign with a stop rather than a flourish. One way to read a placement in this degree is as great inner force that needs an outlet, and as the lesson in noticing pressure before it chooses its own moment. Another is simpler: some changes arrive not gradually but at once, and the halt they bring is also a chance to start again differently.

Lynda Hill looks at the degree on each side of a placement, reading the earlier as background and the later as direction. Before Leo 1 comes Cancer 30, a member of the DAR proud of her descent, the last image of Cancer; after it comes Leo 2, mumps sweeping through a community, again a picture only. By her rule settled pride in lineage gives way to a sudden halt in one man, and the halt in one becomes, in the next degree, something a whole town goes through together. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Aquarius 1, shows a mission church of sun-baked mud brick, from long ago: a plain building that has stood for generations by bearing its weight evenly, beside this degree's sudden release of pressure held in too long.

A planet or point anywhere from Leo 0°00′ up to, but not including, Leo 1°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Leo 0°48′ reads Leo 1, and so does one at Leo 0°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Leo 2 after Leo 0°59′, or back into Cancer 30 before Leo 0°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
